Archie Brings Convention-Exclusive Comic Covers to the New York Comic-Con (Updated)
The 2011 New York Comic-Con will be held from October 13th to 17th at the Javits Center in New York City, and Archie Comics will be in attendance. What’s more, they are bringing some convention-exclusive collectibles with them.
IGN reports that exclusive covers will be available for what will then be the new/current issues of both Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man, which will be #229 (part four of the “Genesis” story arc) and #6 (part two of the “Time Keeps Slipping” story arc), respectively. For Sonic, this means a pencil variant of the cover featuring Super Sonic as rendered by none other than Patrick Spaziante. As for Mega Man…
Well, much as we hate to say this, but it’s a little underwhelming by comparison. To fit with the Mega Man Powered Up-inspired story arc featuring Time Man and Oil Man, this version of Mega Man #6 features one of Capcom’s stock art images of Mega Man from the game in question. No Time Man or Oil Man, no other characters, no background. Just Mega Man with the title and name of the story.
You can see both covers below. And to be honest, while we’ve enjoyed what Archie has been doing with the comic otherwise, even we could understand if Mega Man fans who attend the NYCC instead opted for the Sonic comic.
Update: We forgot to mention, IGN also notes that Patrick Spaziante and the creative team behind Mega Man will be on hand for autographs at the show.

Even though this cover is not very exciting, I have to give a big thumbs up to the Archie Comics so far. They’ve been great, and I hope it keeps going strong!
Wow that’s exceptionally lazy.
ugh….even the MM Powered Up english box art looked better….
but still the comic book series has been great so far and this one cover won’t change that
Hahah, wooooow… Way to get folks interested in your new comic!
You try and be reasonable…
Wow, just make a pencil like the one for Sonic. Would it had been that hard?
Wow! That’s……. not even trying.
Time does keep slipping… slipping and slipping as we gradually fall into a kind of time paradox, where all of our time in the world is disappearing without it being used for anything productive… Disappearing right under our noses…
And as the time keeps slipping, the artists suddenly realize that they have zero time left, and can only copy and paste a generic image of Powered Up Rockman on an otherwise blank cover to make up for time lost in the slipping time paradox…
Curse you Time Man!
But jokes aside, yeah, that is royally pathetic. My respects for the comic has just lowered.
Um, what? Seriously, what’s the deal? This is doom and gloom? Because they used a stock image for a convention issue?
Canceling all Mega Man titles . . . now THAT is worth making a mountain out of, but this? Distinct molehill, people.
Archie gets props for the comic. A stock image for a version that many of us won’t be getting? Whoopy-doo. If that’s what breaks your interest in this comic . . . I have no words.
^ This. C’mon people…
As a collector of these comics….I just gotta say I hate con-exclusives of well….anything. I live no where near New York and it’s of course not feasible for me to go all the way to New York just to get a con-exclusive comic (which I gotta agree with most of you….has a lame and lazy cover….and I really liked MMPU.) Sorry but con-exclusives are just mean to collectors…I love this comic series but….
Even if this is “exceptionally lazy,” I’ve been doing a damn good job at making every Archie-related Mega Man purchase thus far. Guess I’ll stalk eBay for this variant…
Honestly, seeing as I couldn’t even make it out to NYCC, I’m more than ok with the fact that I’m not missing out on some super rad exclusive cover. If anyone does end up getting it, I’m sure it’ll be a collectors item (and it is cool art in its own right).
The local comic shop had some issues of Mega Man when I visited (more than I thought they would!), but I saw no villain variant covers. Do they keep those behind the counter or something?
They’re just using stock art for a special cover few people will be getting, and wouldn’t be worth the money to get new pencils for. It’s not THAT big a deal, guys, and certainly nothing to “lower your respects” over.
I feel slightly underwhelmed by this cover. They should have gone with this picture instead, because nothing says mega collector’s item like a mega crotch shot: http://www.themmnetwork.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=83&pid=343#top_display_media
Indeed, I have just as much respect for the guys at Archie as I always have.
It simply seems to me like if you want to get more people interested in your awesomesauce comic, you’d offer up an exclusive cover that is dripping with epic proportions of badassery.
Like the Sonic cover. Good lord Spaz, your art is amazing.
In a way I don’t care, because I’d probably never get an exclusive like that anyway…but the point is that it’s supposed to be interesting and special, to gather attention to the series and make the people who get it feel special. The Sonic cover is awesome and has that effect. Stock art doesn’t.
But…Powered Up Mega Man is super adorable so, who cares!?
People will still pick this up. The cover art is lazy as heck but people will still pick this up.
Because it’s Mega Man.
Saw the Sonic cover just minutes ago on Sonic Retro.
Than I go to TMMN, read “Archie bla bla” think “Woohoo! Can’t wait to see the MegaMan cover” followed by me scrolling down, just to see they simply used Powered UP artwort.
Well, I just gotta believe you guys when you say the comics are awesome, but that’s just laziness powered up
Time keeps slipping for this story arc and fingers keep flipping at this cover art.
Aren’t you guys overreacting a little bit over the MM cover?
What a silly thing to complain about. 99% of us won’t even see this cover anyway.
MegaMan: Lazyness Powered Up!
I just bought this cover on ebay signed for $207.00. I could’nt pass it up cuz I have every cover thus far. Hopefully someday ill double my money.
