No, Capcom Is Not Headhunting The Protomen…
Following the accusations of Capcom throwing anyone with even the slightest hint of Blue Bomber in their blood out of the San Diego Comic-Con, new charges have been levied against the company.
The latest mud slung at Capcom have positioned them as the author of a cease and desist order against popular Mega Man-inspired rock-opera musicians The Protomen. The letter from the group, in which they purportedly give fans the bad news, seems to have first emerged as a rumor from GoNintendo, with fans wasting no time giving the call to arms. Capcom’s Seth Killian tried to dispel the rumor, but it seems his denial was drowned out to many, not being heard over their own calls for blood.
Fans are skeptical of any denial from Capcom. Why would they tell the truth, right? At least, that appears to be the popular way of thinking. Not to mention, the URL to the band’s website suddenly and mysteriously began to lead to Capcom Unity… what’s up with that?
So, how about a denial from the group themselves?
In response to the flurry of questions they received about being held down by “the man,” The Protomen issued the following response to the followers of their mailing list, titled “URGENT INFO!”
Dear Everyone,
It’s only been a little over a week since leaving Nashville, TN, United States, North America, America, Western Hemisphere, Earth, for this leg of the Hot Summer Nights Tour ’11, but we’ve already found ourselves in some hairy situations. Turbo Lover entered the Skyhammer in a Georgia Tech demolition derby death match (a GTDDDM, if you will)… where she got her right ear ripped off. Kilroy won controlling stock in FanGamer in a no-holds-barred arm-wrestling death match (a NHBAWDM, if you still will)… And every member of the band was beaten in the Conway Twitty “Conway’s Latest Greatest Hits; Volume I – contains the new hit single: “Ain’t She Somethin’ Else” Stare-Off of Death 2011 (Henceforth known as a CTCLGH;VI-CTNHS:”ASSE”S-OoD-11).
Seriously, go look at that album cover and try to make yourself believe you could beat a stare like Conway’s.
And now: The answer to the question that every single one of you have been sending to our electronic mailbox machine (don’t be acting like you didn’t email us about it… I’m pretty sure you drunk emailed us or something. Seriously… the things you said…): <------No that isn't an emoticon.
Q:\> Capcom Ceasifying and Desisterizing The Protomen?
A:\> Absolutely not. The Capcom/Protomen Cease and Desist Letter Fiasco ’11 (CPCDLF11) is a complete hoax. A not-so-thought-out one, for that matter, but we really appreciate the effort. For those of you who bit into that chicken leg, shame on you for thinking we’d go down that easily. We’ve got a lot more sass than all that. Furthermore, Capcom has been nothing but nice to us since we got this beast rolling (even though we stole Seth Killian’s megaphone). Now, I can’t speak for the game cancellations, but the general vitriol surrounding Capcom at the moment needs to end. We understand that it’s upsetting to see a game you’ve been waiting for get cancelled at the last minute, but maybe now is the time to focus on letting them know how much we all need that Protomen/Man Game to be made… (OK, I think that’s enough self promotion and exploitation of a situation for one email).
As for the untimely destruction of the ProtoSite, We’re investigating suspects and have narrowed it down to these possibilities:
1. The Player Vs Performer 2011 tour currently battling it out on the east coast collided with the Hot Summer Nights ProtoTour causing a hurricane of nerdery so powerful that it took down our broadcast HQ off the coast of Florida.
2. The Megas hacked our site during a break in their recording schedule for their new album, “I Wanna Be The One.” Here is a leaked mp3 of that album’s title track.
3. Whitney Houston hacked our site because she’s livid that Murphy Weller was cast instead of her in the hotly anticipated sequel to Waiting To Exhale. Waiting To Exhale II: Still Waiting.
Now on to more important and real news… The August West Coast Of America Tour!
Since our recent perceived bout with near death, we’ve decided it best to rename the next leg of our 2011 tour, “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” in honor of our dear friends in Starship.

So, there you have it: another rumor debunked.

Commander is awesome.
In defense of the hoaxers, they aren’t playing unfairly. CAPCOM led us on for quite some time and dumped us, like a bad relationship. We gave and we gave and we GAVE. With no return.
If that’s considered fair play, then all is fair in love and war.
For the people who didn’t get the cryptic response (let’s face it, a lot of people won’t): Their site was either hacked or they got overwhelmed by spambots.
A quick google search for “The Protomen” reveals that their site’s news was infested with fake articles linking to spam and porn, which is the likely cause for the site going down. It also seems that this spam situation predates the Legends 3 cancellation and should be treated as unrelated.
This is getting crazy… Sure I was dissapoointed as hell ,but this is getting too extreme. Whoever is doing this I hope to let you know that you are damaging the fanbase not helping it at all. If you are a part of the fanbase wouldn’t this be just more dishonor towards the fanbase because a group or an individual isn’t happy… That rumors must be spread to cast an even bigger fire than it already has to be?
And besides the protomen group is also supporting the 100,000 strong like dealy page I think… I could be wrong ,but this is getting out of hand. I just hope this comes to pass ,but with things as they stand now there is rage and anger. I just go over the rage part and now trying to just deal with the dissappoint and be supportive to causes I believe more worthy.
Sorry I didn’t finish my though “and be supportive of causes with mml3 even if they backfire.” There is strong support to keep trying.
Lance> I thought the problem was the domain name redirecting to Capcom Unity?
I’m a big fan of Legends and I was very upset when Legends 3 got cancelled, but honestly, the people that keep trying to spread these rumors are annoying me more than Capcom is. It’s only making matters worse and wont help anything, nor will it get the point across properly anyway. Such tactics don’t really work in cases like these and they probably never will. People need to take a chill pill or something, seriously.
That said, I’m glad it was just a hoax, and not the real deal.
I have to agree with Servbot X. This and the Tron cosplayer rumor may have been debunked, but Capcom deserves the bad publicity — not that they could really do anything worse to their PR than cancel a game after openly tantalizing the fans with its possibility for over half a year.
I looked up “shooting yourself in the foot” in the dictionary of idioms and Capcom’s logo was the accompanying illustration.
Hope the OSTStation on youtube sees this. They’ve set their Mega Man songs to private cuz they were afraid of getting taken down by Capcom.
LBD: The URL redirection was either set up at the domain level or on the site itself. However, the site was completely down without the redirect prior to it forwarding you to Capcom Unity.
Let’s just wait and see, but at least we know Capcom had no hand in this.
I looked into a while ago this morning and found out that it seems The Protomen site is hosted on dreamhost when you search their information on page inventory sites. Dreamhost seems to have a exploit with faulty PHP coding. A search for hacking and dream host brings up a search result, around the last one down, that just as recently as last month, several IPs were attacked by hacking attempts which seem to be the result of skiddies, spambots, a combination of the two, or a man who goes by the name Professor Monkey-for-a-Brain.
Redirects really are the most simplistic trick in the book, and it can’t just suddenly happen overnight.
Commander is hilarious.
Screw the trolls. Join the devroom and become a servbot. Pronto.
see to it if they can trash me around with my X buster with the Ultimate Armor! Nova Strike rules baby! burn Capcom Burn!!!! hahaha.
Okay, this is going way too far.
We are not people that are part of the Sonic fandom, guys (AKA Sonicf*gs), we’re better than that; much better. So whoever is doing this or encouraging them, *please*, cut it out.
Yeah, we’re all angry and upset over the cancellation, and Capcom’s doing the expected bad PR thing. However, this level of ridiculous unbridling hating on Capcom is just plain wrong. They’re inadvertently hurting the people they claim Capcom is attacking in the process and I know that’s not what the rest of us want.

I’m getting sick and tired of these rumors. Seriously, I know your upset about two games got canceled this year, but this is going way to far. Seriously, STOP CALLING CAPCOM BAD!! THEY TRIED THEIR BEST TO KEEP THE GAME UP, BUT THEY DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO FINISH IT!! Good Lord, just leave the company alone. -_-
The issue isn’t exactly the rumormongers. The URL thing is weird.
It’s that people are so quick to assume the worst and pour out hate. Being mean isn’t going to sway Capcom to revive MML3. We must be more diplomatic!
@Puffball
How is this relevat to the Sonic Fandom?
You know for everyone one of these fake rumors that pops up it just further convinces Capcom we aren’t worth their time, these rumors ain’t doing us any favors.
Everybody, become a Servbot! This article gives pretty simple directions for doing so: http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9085141
I’m really starting to get sick of these fake rumors. I know that for a lot of people it was upsetting to hear that Legends 3 was canceled but spreading false rumors about Capcom to try and tarnish their reputation is not the proper way to handle it. It’s an immature act that will only serve to tarnish the name of Mega Man fans.
PStart, I just went to the promo site for MML3 and boy are those games awesome. You deserve 1st place like a boss.
I had a feeling this wasn’t true, just as with the Comic-Con booth stuff. That’s not to say this makes Capcom look any better in light of everything they’ve pulled — it doesn’t — but even Capcom wouldn’t sink that low. I think. They have forever to prove me wrong, though.
What I think is really sad about all these rumors is that Capcom has destroyed its image so thoroughly and completely among Mega Man fans that so many of them could believe such outlandish rumors to actually be true. Most of the time, we’d hear rumors like that and scoff, knowing they’re crazy. But now that we’ve seen just how badly Capcom is willing to the Mega Man franchise and its fans, such outlandish rumors don’t seem so outlandish anymore. That’s what’s truly sad about all this.
The fail is strong in this one.
You know you’ve failed a batman gambit when the majority of the fandom you’re trying to toy with chooses the reasoning side opposed to the violent side
because Mega Man.
@HeatPhoenix
Wow, thanks dude!
We love you Commander.
@ Model M
Late reply is late. Have you ever seen the way some people in the Sonic fandom *act*? It’s obscene. They act like the same people starting up these rumors, and they also act like the same people who believe wholeheartedly in those same rumors and start up even more crap. I’m not saying the majority are like that here, but I fear this is the first step.
