The Mega Man Network Interview with Archie Comics: Your Questions Answered! (Part 1)

It has been a little while since we put the call out to you for your questions for the Archie Comics creative staff behind the new Mega Man comic. The folks there have been working at a feverish pace to get the book going, and as some of you have already seen, the effort appears to be paying off.

Fortunately, with the first issue set to hit comic shops later this week, we have received answers to some of your questions! Writer Ian Flynn and artist Patrick Spaziante are still hard at work, and so the questions passed along to them may take a little more time to get back to us. In the meantime, editor Paul Kaminski has stepped up to help field some of the broader questions surrounding the book.

Do note that quite a few of you asked similar questions, so in the interest of time and space, those will likely be condensed to one general question for the team.

And now, on to questions from you, The Mega Man Network’s visitors and readers!

1) At some point in time, are you planning on ending the Classic storyline and lead into the X storyline? –Shawn Adair

Paul Kaminski, Editor (PK): It will take a bit of time, but we’re looking forward to exploring all the corners of the Mega Man Universe, X especially!

2) SEGA has been known to keep certain game characters/concepts off limits in the Sonic comic. Can you tell us if/what Capcom says is off-limits for now? –Stephen

PK: Capcom has been extremely helpful and encouraging throughout this whole process, and so far everything we’ve wanted to try or include has been met with nothing but helpful and positive feedback. I wouldn’t presume to speak for Capcom here, but I think as long as we remain respectful to the characters and tell a good story with them, everything is on the table!

3) Will the series cover games from 1-10? –[email protected]

PK: It’s our hope to include all of those games into the comic series – but we can’t tell you the why or the how yet – you’ll have to read the series to find out!

4) Will there be any custom Robot Masters, such as Barrage Man, Express Man, and Multi Man from the Dreamwave comics? –steev

PK: Archie’s Mega Man is much more game-inspired in terms of plot, look and feel than the Dreamwave books were. Starting out, we feel that the Mega Man Universe already has so many awesome characters and Robot Masters that are begging to be explored that we won’t need to re-invent the wheel just yet. But you can expect to see an original character or two integrated along the way.

5) Will it be reaching worldwide ;-;?

I mean I live in Mexico and it’s unfair that it only says subscriptions to USA and Canada – Gingler

PK: The Mega Man comics will be available to North American territories, which includes Mexico, so you should be covered! Again, other countries outside of North America are encouraged to write us at [email protected] and let us know you want to see Mega Man comics worldwide!

6) Will I be able to purchase the cover variants separately or is it like a luck of the draw kind of thing? –Elvin Daniel Padilla

PK: All Mega Man variant covers will be available for purchase in comic stores only – subscribers and newsstands will get the “main” cover only. For a comic shop near you, call 1-888-comicbook.

7) What changes/additions have been made story story wise to enrich the tale? Is it deeper than the games or has nothing really been changed? –Tornado Man

PK: Well we can’t give those details away, but we can say that Archie’s Mega Man will be extremely faithful to the games, using comic book storytelling that is quintessentially American.

8 ) How did you sign on with Capcom? I think its a great idea and i already have the comic pre-ordered! Great job with Sonic the Ongoing-series! –Eagon

PK: About this time last year we started discussing how to expand our videogame comic book titles beyond Sonic. As some word got out about such an expansion, Capcom approached us about the possibility of a Mega Man comic, and the rest is history!

9) Any chance of a Blue Bomber (Mega Man) meets the Blue Blur (Sonic) in a crossover? Or will SEGA and Capcom not allow this? –Henmo24

PK: Wouldn’t that be cool?? It’s really up to Capcom and SEGA, but no plans at the moment.

10) Will Ian write the whole series for the foreseeable future, or will other writers write stories, too? –MKK

PK: Ian was heavily involved in the pitch for the series and will be its sole writer, at least for the foreseeable future.

In addition, keep an eye on Archie’s official Mega Man blog, where you will soon find two questions from our very own MMN staffers, LanceHeart and Oakie620, over on , where they inquire about getting a subscription through PayPal and opening international subscriptions.

And that’s it for this round! Keep your eyes peeled, as there were quite a few questions sent, and we hope to have more answers coming your way soon! In the meantime, you can check out more news, info, and other tidbits in the official Archie Mega Man blog, and subscribe at The Archie Comics Shop!

  1. Xero Omega says:

Sweet! I hope they do the X series!

  2. Tabby says:

we’re looking forward to exploring all the corners of the Mega Man Universe, X especially!

<– I wonder if they’re going to be allowed to touch BN/Starforce or be discouraged like UDON was.

  3. #20 says:

Guess it’s a little late for this round, but I have a few Q’s maybe LBD or someone else can answer. Like, why does the publishing date read July 2011? And, when is the next issue coming out??

  4. 20: I’d look for the next issue about a month from now. And #3 should be about a month after that. And so forth.

For more precise dates, use our search engine for “Archie” and you should find some solicitations up through issue #4.

Tabby: It would probably require a separate negotiation.

  5. Trebuchet says:

    I’m SHAWN! Hi mom!

  6. Trebuchet says:

But yeah, I don’t think a comic book of BN/SF would be necessary since the plot of the games is already heavy enough in the games. Not to mention the anime’s.

By the way, loved the first issue! Kind of odd that Rush is on the cover even though he doesn’t exist yet in the story, but maybe I just missed something . . .

  7. Alyssa Watts says:

I couldn’t come up with any questions to ask, but those are all very good questions here! I’m looking forward to seeing more good questions and interesting answers. I really appreciate how the Archie Comics staff took the time to answer some inquiries that may have itched in our minds one time or another. :D

It would sure be awesomeness if SEGA and Capcom got together to allow for maybe a three-issue Sonic/Mega Man crossover story arc. ^.^ Oh well, we’ll just have to see what happens!… :3

  8. TheAncientEnemy says:

Sonic meeting Mega Man would be… dumb.

  9. Aaron says:

“The Mega Man comics will be available to North American territories, which includes Mexico, so you should be covered! Again, other countries outside of North America are encouraged to write us at [email protected] and let us know you want to see Mega Man comics worldwide”

I can’t help but wonder if there’s any chance of Japan getting this. It’d be interesting to see how they’d reaction to someone else take on it.

  10. xfannumber330 says:

nah sonic meeting megaman would be kinda epic..actually..sonic even says epic in the first cutscenes of sonic colours and i hope sonic goes hyper including knuckles and then dbz style fights..yeah..

  11. xfannumber330 says:

what about the zero series..i like the x series but i love the zero series..hope they make it out like hokuto no ken and yu yu hakusho

  12. HeatPhoenix says:

    @xfannumber330

Sonic saying epic in Sonic Colours was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen. Other than that it was kinda cool.

But Mega Man vs. Sonic? Not gonna happen (hopefully).

  13. RADIX says:

“using comic book storytelling that is quintessentially American.”

*looks at other US third-party MM stuff that did that (more or less) and how the fans regard them*

Way to doom yourselves, guys. DDD: (I’m fine with the comic, but I just know some purist is gonna read that statement and snap)

  14. Anonymous says:

The comic is awesome. They totally put the coveted “L” pipe on Doctor Light’s house/lab! :D

  15. I’m surprised that some of you are against the idea of a Mega Man/Sonic crossover. Personally, I think it would be awesome. Though, I am a fan of crossovers… still, I can admit when a particular crossover is a bad idea. This isn’t one of those times, though. Although the two series have obvious differences, I think there’s MORE than enough similarities between the two series to validate a crossover.

Granted, it all comes down to Sega and Capcom, but if they ever give a mutual okay, then you can be sure it will happen, and I, for one, think that it would be quite awesome.

  16. Morgan says:

Aside from a certain spoiler concerning a difference between the game and comic, the comic is amazing.

    Neige cameo spotted!

  17. Alyssa Watts says:

@ xfannumber330 and Clown Prince of Crime: Yay! IF that happens, it would certainly be “way past cool!” At least to us, anyway. ^.^

@Xero Omega: I hope so, too!

  18. Kiwi555Kiwi says:

I reallywould like to know if they will go and complete all the Classic stories and then move onto X and finish that and move onto Zero, etc. because as much as I like all the series, I’d hate to have to move on chronologically and Archie never go back to Classic stories.

  19. Andras says:

Getting fairly annoyed. It still hasn’t arrived yet, but it’s at our local comic shop.

  20. Maetch says:

I’ve got the first issue and it all looks great, though I’ve noticed that they don’t actually mention what city the story takes place in.

Caught the Neige cameo (that sneaky Human’s always showing up unexpectedly, even 200 years before her time) and I’ve also noticed a possible cameo from another iconic Capcom lady.

Also, they’ve got their own version of Off-Panel. Nice.

  21. Anonymous says:

@Maetch: You talking about the “…-Li.” News reporter? :p

  22. clayman says:

    I have the comic, AND ITS AWESOME!!! but there are one or two things I want to tell those guys;
    1. uh, megaman couldn’t charge his buster until megaman 4 so… are they gonna make it so the charge breaks or somthing?
    2. a little note for when doing the elecman section; remember the magnet beam!

    short circuits LOL

  23. Clayman: Script for that issue is long done, I’m afraid. We’ll just have to see how it turns out!

  24. INSERT_COIN says:

Got the first issue today. Very very well done despite a few flaws but it’s definitely something to keep following.

  25. Maetch says:

    @Anonymous

Aside from the lack of the hairbuns, she does look an awful lot like Chunners. Plus, her character did do the news in MM9′s intro. I’m not sure if it was intentional, but it seems likely.

  26. pumpkinman says:

I cant wait to get mine!

  27. Knozz says:

Wondering…. do you guy’s got your copy? I bought the 1 years deal and i still didnt get any… I though i would have get one by now ! CANT WAIT !

  28. Agelu says:

I almost shivered when I read that they will be specially focusing on X series.

…sigh, like the only really bad thing is that alternate covers aren’t easy to find, and that it comes only one per month!!

  29. RandyPandy says:

    @ Knozz
I subscribed as well (pre-ordered, even), and I still have yet to receive my copy of the first one. I’m starting to get a tad annoyed and anxious now.

  30. Rock says:

When will digital versions be available for purchase?

  31. Natalia says:

Wow! I Love Mega Man REMINDS ME OF MY CHILDHOOD :’)
I would like to know if Zero’s gonna make a cameo or if he would have a comic just based on him! GOD! I LOVE HIM! And I will also love very much Archie Comics if they do it :D
