In Baltimore This Weekend: OtaRockman at Otakon

This weekend in Baltimore, Maryland, from Friday, July 30th to Sunday, August 1st, will be Otakon. And what has become a part of the annual Otakon experience for many a Mega Man/Rockman fan is the gathering of like-minded individuals known affectionately as “OtaRockman.”

Each year, a fans tend to converge for cosplay photos and Mega Man gaming tournaments, with the time and place usually to be determined at the show (as Otakon tends to keep a rather fluid schedule; it’s usually held behind or near the Starbucks kiosk at the main entrance). This year, the gathering begins at 11am on Saturday.

In previous years, Mega Man Battle Network games were the order of the day for tournaments, but host Terra Stardroid has decided to shake things up this year with a Mega Man 9 tournament in which you see how far you can go in Endless Mode within five minutes.

And yes, there will be trophies for the victors… or at least, there should be, if all goes according to plan. For your chance to be a champion, be at the OtaRockman gathering at noon on Saturday.

On Saturday at 8pm in Panel 6 (Hilton Key Ballroom 1-6) (date/location may be subject to change) will be the panel “The Anime & Manga Realm of Mega Man,” hosted by myself, Tabby, Terra Stardroid, Robo Nanya, and Ryouko of Rockman.EXE Online:

For the past two years our focused group of Mega Man lovers have presented comprehensive panels at Otakon, all about our famous blue bomber. This year, we have dedicated ourselves to bringing forth all the facts and interesting tidbits about the adaptations of Mega Man into both the manga and anime forms. Several of them never made it to our shores, so we’re sure you’ll experience something new and exciting! As always, we’ll also be doing our raffle for some unbelievable prizes. Don’t miss it!

We even got a “Best Panel Award” (and the photograph you see at right) from Ending B, so give it a shot if you’re in the area this weekend!

What unbelievable prizes will there be? Suffice to say that we once again have the support of our friends Matt Moylan and UDON Entertainment and JGonzo of Capcom Unity, but beyond that? It’s a surprise!

And if you’d like to make plans for meeting with others at the event, we have a forum thread dedicated to that right here.

Rats! Otakon’s coming up, and I’m preparing to move to L.A. around the first week of August! There goes my (practically once in a lifetime) chance to meet “the Tabbers” and friends… T-T

  3. Sammy says:

It’s too bad Kumoricon here in Oregon isn’t that big. If anything, I’d love to see one of you guys there…

… Not like I’m doing any RockMan cosplays this year. (Aside from bringing my Lan headband along…)

But have fun, to all. :3

  4. TJ says:

YES! I’m going to Otakon, so I can see this stuff!

I hope they like my Batsu Ichimonji costume. :3

  8. FlameStream says:

I love these kind of event just to see what people come up costumed as, especially when it’s well worked on. That said, I really liked the Greiga Rockman costume Ryouko crafted (assuming this is the same one I followed its construction back in the days I lurked in the Rockman community).

I won’t be attending the event. But I do hope that everyone who will be there will have a nice time.

  9. Megafan100 says:

Ryouko made the costume?! Cool! Does that mean SHE’s the one wearing the costume up there?
Well, I hope all goes well for “the Tabbers” and friends. Have fun at OtaRockman Otakon.

  10. Dr. Jerk says:

I just hope there’s a follow up after the panel. I really want to read what was shown, as I cannot go whatsoever…

  11. Ryouko says:

Yeah, that’s me in that piccie. XD I wore Greiga to the panel last year cause it was immediately following our cosplay gathering.

We hope to see everyone at the panel tonight! For those who can’t make it, we will be recording it and posting it online afterwards. :)

  12. Airman says:

My friend was there dressed as the Mega Man X8 verion of Alia. She won an award for it at the anime convention where we live for craftsmanship. :)

  13. Airman: Saw her! That was an amazing costume; is it anyone we know wearing it? I didn’t really get a chance to find out, and all the headgear usually throws me off.

  14. Ryouko says:

The Alia was one of our roommates. :) She frequents my forums over at REO, by the username sugoi sukafu. She was also Meiru from EXE on Sunday. :)

  15. Zai says:

The panel was really nice. You guys really did an awesome job this year, and the raffle at the end was a nice touch (I was the guy who won the Rockman Zero artbook!).

  16. Psycho Sukafu says:

@ LBD “Nytetrayn” I don’t usually post here, but I do lurk. Find a Psycho Sukafu on any forum and it’s probably me. REO is the only different name I have.

That said, panel was the most organized one I went to over the weekend. Only wished they hadn’t scheduled it during the masquerade. But it has to happen to someone’s. :)

  17. Ryouko, Psycho Sukafu> Ah, no kidding! Didn’t even see Mayl on Sunday, any pics about?

    And Psycho Sukafu, glad you liked the panel, though we may need to reconsider how we have people do the Q&A next time. ^^;

As for time, yeah… I missed the Gundam panel as a result. Alas, duty comes first.

    Zai> Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
