Capcom Announces Mega Man Universe

Capcom Unity and the Capcom Europe blog have literally just announced that Keiji Inafune is working on Mega Man Universe for Xbox LIVE and the PS3 PlayStation Store.

Quick update: Keiji Inafune has announced on his own blog that, unlike other Mega Man games of recent times, he is fully in charge of the concept and design of Mega Man Universe. He believes it is a Mega Man game that captures the taste of Mega Man nostalgia, and expects it to be enjoyed by Mega Man fans all over the world. He also considers it as “everyone’s Mega Man.”

Said to be a “revolutionary take on the seminal classic, it is Capcom’s aim for Mega Man Universe to be the most creative Mega Man experience yet. “In Mega Man Universe, imagination is the star of the game.”

Said Capcom Entertainment Head of Research and Development Management, Keiji Inafune:

“We are thrilled to finally be able to announce Mega Man Universe. This game will break the mold and challenge the conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be. When fans finally get to see it, I believe they’ll envision their most far-out Mega Man dreams coming true.”

The press release adds that “Inafune is committed to helping craft a Mega Man experience that meets the highest expectations of Capcom fans,” and “gamers can expect Mega Man Universe to bring the core experience fans want while delivering on the promise of innovation that Capcom is known for. Its official: classic gaming will never be same again.”

More is to come on Capcom’s blogs and at the San Diego Comic Con next week. In the meantime, GameSpot has an exclusive Q&A, plus the following trailer:

“What does the teaser trailer mean?” asks Capcom Unity’s JGonzo. “What are Ryu and Arthur doing there? Well, that’s the point of a teaser, right?”

As for the image we saw yesterday? Capcom Unity has the story on that:

In addition, we’re going to have MMU-branded foam Mega Man busters created by iam8bit available to give away at Comic Con! The image I posted yesterday was early concept work for this awesome swag that we’ll be giving out at the show! They will be limited to 2000 total, and we will be giving away 50 at our booth every hour, so be sure to grab one!

Finally, we’re going to be holding a Mega Man cosplay contest on Saturday, July 24th at 1PM at Comic-Con at the Capcom booth. We will have 50 exclusive, Japan-only Mega Man trucker hats and 50 Mega Man busters to give out to the first 50 cosplayers. The winner (as judged by Mega Man Universe producer Ito-san) will also receive a signed sketch by Keiji Inafune!

Bu…but I like making early judgements, it’s my thing!

Also, we have something in common with the Sonic community; complete and utter contempt for the 3D games in the series.

  2. J. L. says:

The trailer had very good production values, but a terrible concept :(

Anyway, thie trailer said nothing and I’m not getting interested at all until I see what this thing is going to be about.

    I’m not expecting anything, really…

  3. Windsor says:

Rockin’ Robots, that video is awesome! I’m filled with hope for the franchise, and am all for this idea! Haters, quit complaining, because at least this isn’t a whole new series again, huh? At least this isn’t an 8-Bit Megaman 11, right? Or Megaman Battle Network 2 straight off of your GBA cart, featuring another ten minutes of Star Force thrown in at the end.

Honestly, I could see Capcom beginning development on this since before Megaman 9, and releasing the 8-bit titles and collections to tide people over until this, the real next-gen Mega Man comes out. It’s about time Mega Man was fun again, and that’s exactly what this game will be. It’ll be a break from the very little “continuity” Mega Man has, so that we can some have fun.

  4. MXsora says:

    @MegaBob

Correction, we don’t like Megaman X7. Legends is the only other series in 3D and if you hate that then you have no taste. If you’re also pointing the finger at X8, Powered Up, or Maverick Hunter X then you must not like good games period.
Also do not relate us to the sonic community, that’s an insult on a whole new level.

  5. the.maverickk says:

If this game uses a clay-mation like graphics engine I’d love it. On the flip side though I will likely not end up playing this since I have the Wii. Mind you I’ve never felt like I’m completely missing out on anything in terms of Mega Man games since my favorite series have been original, X and Zero.

  6. RedrazerZero says:

    @MXsora

    Hahahahahahahhahaha LOL!! I needed that!

  7. Vince says:

Damn it Capcom, the DS STILL exists!

ZX is more or less dead, a new 2D platforming title for DS would be nice…

  8. RedrazerZero says:

Oh yeah… forgot to comment on the trailer. Now this is just from what I see, and this is my opinion, so no one come after me for this. For I’m a Huge Rockman fan. I like 98.9% of everything Rockman, been with the series since 89… I don’t like this trailer… I think, I don’t know what to think but I know, I don’t like this trailer. just my expression for Capcom to know, or whatever.

Hope whatever this is, is a lot better then this trailer.

  9. Kind of a Troll says:

How is it “everyone’s Mega Man” if it’s not going to be on PC or Wii? When are they going to pull their heads from the asses and start bringing back MM to PC?

F*** Inafune. He’s continually declining in my book of awesome.

  10. Ghost Man says:

So basically, for those of us who only own a Wii and don’t have hundreds of dollars to spend on another console…this news is utterly pointless. Thanks, Capcom.

  11. Quint says:

When I read the comments on the game out there I was confused. When I watched the trailer I was even more confused (and a bit disgusted). Maybe its a blessing Nintendo won’t be getting this..

  12. MegaBob says:

    @MXSora

Oh yeah, I forgot about Legends, I’ve never played those games. When I wrote about that I was thinking about X7 more than anything else.

I said the Sonic thing in reply to a comment on the previous page which said we were carrying on like a Sonic community.

Also, MHX and MMPU are awesome, but I never really got into X8.

    Anyway… er yeah. -nods-

  13. ThetisZX says:

Not the best trailer I’ve ever seen…. Did Robot Chicken do it or something? (I hate that show…) Still looking forward to the game tho.

  14. Andras says:

This trailer means f*** all this far. loljudgments.

  15. Man who loves Rocka Music says:

Lots of skepticism huh? Well lets wait and see what will be the future or be a flop I will play it before I make my decision.

  16. Man who loves Rocka Music says:

It looks more like a montage of many games in one. Sorry for the double post. Oh and to get this out my system. LEGENDS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!

  17. Aaron says:

Perhaps only the 80′s and early 90′s generation can appreciate the trailer. It totally brings back memories of those early NES days and being a kid doing that era.

While the quality of the sculpts leave much to be desired, this is just a promo to give some vague concept to what the game will be like. The way I take it, this game is in the same look as Little Big Planet. Actually I read that the game is supposed to use retro-ish music and graphics to invoke nostalgia.

Don’t assume the game is going to look like this. This was just a fun little wtb (what the beavers!?) trailer. Don’t rule out Wii so soon, we all know how Capcom is with ports. Inafune loves us guys, smile!

  18. GigaMegamanx says:

    ……..Legends……

  19. Grid Man says:

[sarcasm] But I don’t have a Playstation 3, XBOX 360, or even a Wii. Why doesn’t Inafune just port the game to the Game Boy Color or maybe the Super Nintendo? Or how about the Etch-A-Sketch, everyone has one of those! #@(*$ Capcom! I am highly disappointed in their inability to see that they r stupid for not catering to my every need and are only thinking about the people with systems other than my own. [/sarcasm]

  20. Kind of a Troll says:

Wow. Way to miss the point Grid Man.

  21. Man who loves Rocka Music says:

Yeah I can feel you on that one Aaron. So I was stoked on it.

  22. Proto Stryker says:

    Hah, kudos Grid Man.

  23. Kind of a Troll says:

Stryker and Grid, have you been enjoying MM9 and MM10? I haven’t.

All I want is some new MM action on my PC. Is that too much to ask?

    Apparently it is.

  24. mega says:

To Aaron: I’m a fan from megaman since 1986, so no! I’ve enough with the retro crap! feeling nostalgic? COME ON! EVERY DAMN THING IS ABOUT NOSTALGIC NOW!

  25. Kind of a Troll says:

And unlike a GBC or SNES, a Windows PC is an alive and major gaming platform today. Capcom has steadily brought many of it’s games over to it. But recently, not the one series I actually care about. And that’s what I’m mad about. They are perfectly capable of bringing it over.

I’ll get over it. But I still hope they’ll port them over eventually, in some form.

  26. Kind of a Troll says:

One of you guys with contacts want to ask Crapcom why they have been excluding the PC from recent Mega Manliness?

If there is actually a good and valid reason or philosophy behind it, I’ll shut up about it.

  27. Tornado Man says:

Because it will be pirated like a mother. PC is declining dude.

  28. Kind of a Troll says:

DERP. As if console games can’t/don’t get pirated?

And, as I’ve already pointed out, Capcom still makes PC versions of their games (just not Mega Man now, for some reason). Street Fighter 4 and Resident Evil 5, for recent examples.

Also, said games cost much more than MM9/10 did. So piracy can’t be the reason for Capcom.

  29. Man who loves Rocka Music says:

Pirating is everywhere and we all do it in some form or another. As for the whole PC thing I have not a clue. I have had emulators for a long time ,but thats the cloest to PC variations of games I can get. Perhaps the market for thier PC stuff isn’t as high as the stuff sold on consoles and on the online stores for the consoles.

  30. LanceHeart says:

DERP. As if console games can’t/don’t get pirated?

As of right now, the PS3 has yet to be pirated in any workable fashion. 360 owners also can’t ever hope to remain online for protracted periods if they adhere to piracy as well (including obtaining DLC and patches). PC gaming is the last major non-portable platform that doesn’t allow such sweeping elimination of piracy, much less cheaters. That’s why so few PC releases of games are ever promoted if a console version exists.

  31. Stealthyboy says:

Oh dear god what. This looks like this is going to be horrible.

  32. ZPunk says:

Look knowing Capcom the trailer probably has nothing to do with the game itself. It’s a teaser trailer.

  33. neudevonX says:

It may have had a terrible concept but it was freakin’ sweet!!

  34. Vince says:

I just want more portable MM.

There’s no brand new 3DS MM title announced yet!

  35. Kind of a Troll says:

    @Lanceheart

Hmm. I SERIOUSLY doubt that claim on the PS3. Even if it’s so, it’s only a matter of time.

PC pirates also CAN NOT hope to play online, or get updates, etc if said game is only available through a well protected digital distribution network, such as Valve’s Steam. So if that’s the case, the PC is no worse off than the consoles with their digital distribution service, right?

Anyway, I’m sure piracy isn’t the reason for this.

WHY DOES INAFUNE HATE THE PC!?!?

  36. HumidityPunk says:

Look like totally, absolutely without any doubt….. stupid.
I want a REAL megaman game, a big game, not just a downloadable game.

What was the last major release of a megaman game?
When i say major release, i’m not talking about megaman 9 or 10, i say a MAJOR release.
Well, it was 6 years ago, Megaman X8 and Command Mission.
It was not their best try, but they was Major release.

I think Megaman is near the end :( .
Remember the time we were overloading with megaman title.
Now we got little title like MM: universe,
A rebirth of the franchise is the thing to do.

  37. Man who loves Rocka Music says:

I don’t know about fancy major releases and stuff ,but Megaman has been dare I say declining in recent years due to all this fancy new FPS BS you call a game! FPS’s were great and I can name a few old school ones ,but now the genre is so overused because it meets the public demand of kill and realistic shooter! No one has the balls to say that this generation of Gaming is probably the saddest bunch I’ve ever seen. Sure there are few gold nuggets here and there ,but not enough to call this a treasure strove of worth while gaming. Sorry had to just say it about the disapointment the new gen systems bring.

Anyways back on topic its probably because Capcom has exhausted all they can in Megaman. There just is no more angles left and the series for being around this long is a testiment of time and the power of the fans who support the series for that amount can agree a little if not a lot that hope is running on its last legs here.

So what do you all think can be done to keep this bastion from falling? Do you guys really think that rebirth is the answer? Do you guys think tying loose ends is the way to go? Starting a completely new series is an answer then what is? Would fixing the shaft to PC entertainment be it? Or completely rehalling the series into vast ports and remakes is the only option left?

  38. RedrazerZero says:

No, I think there are plenty left for Rockman to dish out, after all I think it’s the most adaptive video-game title in existences, more so then even Mario. It can be whimsy if it needs to, cool if it needs to, deep if it needs to, colorful if needed, dark, fast, action packed, strategic and so on, and they can all come in without felling forced and very natural. If you ask me Rockman has a lot of eager fans just waiting to embrace the series, cause Street Fighter did well in this FPS dominated place and resurrected its genre, and RPGs are doing well. If you ask me, Rockman’s capabilities to innovate or potential for greatness hasn’t gone down, it’s production has. That’s just me and mine. For any one worried believe me this, in my best opinion the series isn’t going anywhere for a while, it will comeback I feel it.

  39. misora88 says:

I’m sorry if I offend anyone but this trailer is horrible, that Capcom wants to change the look of megaman why?, anime drawing style of megaman is the best, not like Capcom puts it in this trailer, we mega fan want new titles, a rebirth of the franchise, a real megaman game as we all know. Really this is the worst I’ve seen

  40. LanceHeart says:

Hmm. I SERIOUSLY doubt that claim on the PS3. Even if it’s so, it’s only a matter of time.
But it’s absolutely true. Short of buying a debug (developer) version of the console, you can’t make a retail PS3 play pirated games. Sony have gone through extensive lengths to keep it that way, too.

PC pirates also CAN NOT hope to play online, or get updates, etc if said game is only available through a well protected digital distribution network, such as Valve’s Steam. So if that’s the case, the PC is no worse off than the consoles with their digital distribution service, right?
That has never stopped pirates at all. Why else would there still be so many sites devoted to PC game piracy? Only MMORPGs have ever been able to prevent piracy when using official servers compared to most other DRMs.

  41. Saint_Link says:

Could this be a Little Big Planet rip-off?, Only time will tell, I do liked the trailer though.
