Capcom Unity Presents: Mega Man Zero Recollections

As we near the long-awaited release date for Mega Man Zero Collection for the Nintendo DS, JGonzo of Capcom Unity has opted to take a look back at the first time some Mega Man fans of note laid eyes on the game.

Four were chosen to express themselves, and they are Protodude from our affiliate, Protodude’s Rockman Corner; Retronaut Jeremy Parish of 1UP.com; Bit Transmission podcaster Jonathan Holmes of Destructoid; and myself, Lord Black “Nytetrayn” Draco.

More is to come from each of us in the following weeks for each game in the series, with one slight exception: me. This week, I’m tagging out to my partner Heatman, who will help co-represent The Mega Man Network for Mega Man Zero 2.

And so it will go until I get tired of him holding me back and I put him through a glass window on Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake’s “Barber Shop” talk show set.

Oh, um… right. Anyway, you can keep an eye on the Capcom Unity blogs this week for the Zero 2 segments, which we’ll round up like this once again when everyone has said their piece.

    Sweet Jesus…it’s an all-star line up of names I know and love (ohai, Nytetrayn ^_^) talking about the Mega Man Zero series. Gotta see this for sure.

  2. Rock-X says:

    Is this going to be one of those “Many years ago, mankind was on the verge of extinction. A warrior of legend was summoned to prevent a crisis that could destroy not only the past, but the future as well. This is the story of Earth’s last hope for peace.” kind of storytelling?

  3. Gamma Rallyson says:

    … So… Who’s Jannetty?

  4. Supreme Edgeboy says:

    :( Gosh. It’d be so cool if the game was actually called “Rockman Zero Recollections.” Thumbs up to LBD, I never realized you lot at TMM were such high profile people. <3

  5. tornado man says:

    They aren’t.

  6. Lumine1412 says:

    Lol @ the article’s tags

  7. boyle2 says:

    Some money passed behind the back no doubt. I mean really, who needs to look BACK on Mega Man Zero? No one, but what’s it matter when you sweeten the pot for some people to do your dirty work?

    Good games, but damn it if they stop at anything to make a sale.

  8. Thomas Jefferson says:

    *yawn*

  9. Thomas Jefferson says:

    Maybe you guys could talk about how Mega Man now depends on old games repackaged as “remakes” and “collections”, with little to no extra content or anything.

    Mostly I’m just pissed that those ****ing idiots haven’t given the PC any Mega Man love lately. I would gladly pay double price for MM9 and M10 on PC. Capcom already uses Steam for some of their games anyway, right?

    I don’t own any ****ty videogame consoles, which are just crippled and over-priced PCs, really.

    *mumbles angrily*

  10. Clucking Chicken says:

    @Thomas Jefferson:

    Mega Man Online is going to be for the PC. Don’t complain.

  11. Thomas Jefferson says:

    What are you? Stupid?

    Some mysterious MM game that I know nothing about, developed by random Koreans I’ve never heard of, is going to be on PC… yeah, that doesn’t ease any pain whatsoever.

  12. RegalX7 says:

    One collection, years after the Anniversary Collection, doesn’t mean Megaman is “depending” on them.

  13. Clucking Chicken says:

    Wow Tommy, way to rage all over the place. Just because you’re a little grumpy over something minor like this, doesn’t mean you should go around and ticking other people off. Keep that rage to yourself. Do you really think they’ll let this company completely mess up a game like that? More than likely it’s a minor partnership, the company handles the online stuff, and Capcom works on the game itself.

  14. Thomas Jefferson says:

    @RegalX7
    What about that shameful joke of a game “Operate Shooting Star”? The only good stuff to have come out from MM in the last several years is MM9 & MM10 (supposedly, I wouldn’t really know because I CAN’T F’n play them! Which is why I’m pissed).

    @Chicken
    Duhrhurrr. Yes. It’s entirely possible they’ll mess it up. Have you played the DOS games? Mega Man 2 on the Game Boy? Mega Man on the Game Gear? Rockman & Forte: Challenger From The Future?

    Yes, I’m just angry atm. Other people can become “ticked off” only if they let it. But your little “derpaduhr Don’t complain” didn’t help.

  15. @boyle2: Last time I checked, I didn’t have any sort of budget to “pay” individuals for their recollections. These are all friends in the industry that I approached and they were glad to offer their experiences in playing the game.

  16. Clucking Chicken says:

    I’m surprised you haven’t been modded yet Tom. Let’s take a look at all of those games you listed. Were any of those made in the last decade? I don’t think so.

  17. random person says:

    Off topic: Oh lol, so that’s what “LBD” stood for. For the longest time I thought that maybe it was a reference to the GBD/green biker dude whenever I saw the acronym. xD

  18. Thomas Jefferson says:

    And the relevance of that is…?

  19. Thomas Jefferson says:

    Also, since when does Capcom need help ruining their games?

    *shoots a look at X7*

  20. Clucking Chicken says:

    Okay if they’re such a bad company why do you care about their games? It’s obvious that Capcom has a larger focus on consoles, and are just now trying out the PC. Go play Call of Duty or something instead of QQing about Capcom not releasing PC games just to please you.

  21. Thomas Jefferson says:

    Thank you for answering my question in my second post. (Which is a resounding “Yes!”, by the way).

    I love Capcom. But that doesn’t mean I can’t criticize them for something.

    They’ve been making PC ports of their games for a long, long time now. Since those first 2 crappy original DOS games in 1990.

    They have almost the entire X series on PC.

    And it isn’t just to please ME, you a**. There are plenty of people in my position.

    Please return to the kiddie table and do your gaming and MM research before trying to say anything further. For your own good.

  22. Alexander Kesillero says:

    Cool story, bro.

  23. Thomas Jefferson says:

    And I didn’t mean to insult any of the people that are going to be commenting on the Zero games. I appreciate what you guys do.

    I’m just a long time Rockman junkie who has been denied recent Rockman goodness for almost 2 years now (MM9/MM10). I would be thrilled if one day there was a port or collection with 9 and 10 that would include the PC. I seriously contemplated buying a 360 or Wii solely for these games. But I am just unable to do that at this point in my life.

    Besides, even if I were to happen across the money, I’m more likely to upgrade my PC, or build another one.

    @Alexander Kesillero
    *slow clap* Brilliant. Original. You must be proud, eh?

  24. Aggro says:

    Well, isn’t this interesting; looks like I will have some to do while partially incapacitated … !

  25. RegalX7 says:

    You have to be a fake; no one’s that obnoxious. Who are you normally, Thomas Jefferson?

  26. Forci says:

    …Pity. For a moment I thought that Capcom had announced a change to the game’s name.

    I actually liked the idea.

  27. JewceD says:

    You didn’t miss much when it comes to MM9/MM10. Those releases made me sad. I can’t even begin to fathom why you would take a series backwards to MM2 game style/grafs. Don’t get me wrong, I liked MM2, but I also missed the charged buster and slide, not to mention that they should have at least used SNES graffics. I mean, the Charged shot has been a staple since MM4, and the Slide since MM3!! I am well aware that they killed those abilities to help distinguish between the other playable characters but it also kills the game play experience. Don’t mean to bash the latest releases but I for one feel those titles take away from the whole MM experience. Come on, “robenza”. At least have the dignity to replace that with a computer virus, axe the flu symptoms, and turn ‘em into paperweights or zombies. Now I will grant them that the extras were top notch (playing as Proto or Bass), but the little mini-goal trials are gay. So you didn’t miss much. And I’m guessing that you’re not a HUGE MM fan without the use of the consoles. This Collection is going to be totally worth owning a DSi XL!! Sorry if I offened with the MM9/10 stuff.

  28. JewceD says:

    lol offened* awesomeness.

  29. Let’s try to keep comments respectful and without any direct attacks/insults, people (also, keeping language to a PG-like level is appreciated). Otherwise, you’re free to say what you want.

    Rock-X: Nah, this is more of a “personal experience” kind of thing. Mostly in that MMZ kind of stomped mudholes in the lot of us the first time out, offered us a hand, then called us a sissy for taking it.

    –LBD “Nytetrayn”

  30. Thomas Jefferson says:

    @RegalX7
    Uh… what?

    @JewceD
    I’m a fairly big Mega Man fan. Why would one require the recent consoles to be so? Nothing has come out for them except MM9/MM10.

    I was a console gamer until about 2001/2002. I have since sold all my old consoles. All I have now is my PC… and DS (which I’m about to sell). But I still kept most of my Mega Man games. 1-8, MM2GB, MMX1, MMX4-8, MML1-2,MMZX1-2, MMAC, MMXC. But I’m about to sell those too. Not much of a collector, and I’m sick of lugging them around and having them take up space.

    I sold everything except my Gamecube. Do you want to know what I did with that? I literally and honestly just threw it in the trash. Right in the F’n garbage.

  31. JewceD says:

    Eh, to each his/her own. I have all of mine on the collection editions. If you owned a Wii you could still play both the GameCube collections for both MM and MMX. Although you’d still be missing out on the x7&8 without the PS2 and the MHX and MMPU on the PSP. Also, if you hadn’t trashed your GC you could’ve gotten a GBA Adaptor for the MM games on the GBA (that is the only reason I’ve kept my GC). I’d actually like to pick up an old SNES with the GB adaptor so I could play the old GB MM games (I was hoping that the GB collection was going to pan out, lol). Didn’t mean to call you out on your level of ‘fan-dom’, Jeffro. Just saying- MM9/10 wasn’t any real big deal. Honestly, my least fav just before MM Racing, Fighters, and Soccer. Maybe not too bad if you play MM2 and then pretend that they are Megaman 2 1/3 and Megaman 2 2/3 and move right into MM3.

  32. boyle2 says:

    @jgonzo. heeerpp. I was totally playing up my own conspiratorial leanings. All the same, it is a little odd…dare I say, ridiculous.

    The rest of this is messy. Capcom at its core is definitely none too concerned with ruining their games, but lol to PC > consoles.

  33. Thomas Jefferson says:

    I’m willing to let go of all my old stuff because of emulators and ROMs. Yeah, that’s right. The things that are supposedly illegal yet seemingly everyone and their mother talks about and uses out in the open and no one cares.

    There’s also a slew of PMP handheld consoles with decent to great emulators written for them. Something I also take advantage of. I’m carrying around thousands of games for dozens of systems in this little rectangle that I can play wherever.

    But don’t judge me. I have paid (and will pay) for games. I still pay for modern games and movies and things.

    Also, I own X7(Korean version) and X8 on PC. No PS2 needed.

    Alright. I’m done whining about MM and PC.

    But seriously Capcom. Seriously. Start loving the PC again.

  34. boyle2 says:

    I don’t care if anyone wants to play old games on emulators. Emulators don’t have anything to do with PC development going forward.

  35. Gamma Rallyson: Heat is Jannetty.

    –LBD “Nytetrayn”

  36. Man who loves Rocka Music says:

    Ok….? So what was the debate about this time?

  37. Doctor Andy says:

    @Thomas Jefferson

    Megaman 9 and 10 are on EVERY major console, not counting handhelds…

  38. Thomas Jefferson says:

    …why are you stating this obvious thing? Did you even read any of the comments here?

    Yeah, I know it’s on 360/Wii/PS3. And not on PC. That’s my beef.

  39. JewceD says:

    On another note… Do you think that capcom will be soaking up some more of the DS market by making a new MM release now that Metroid, Castlevania, and some other big hitters have seemingly abanddoned it? I hope so. I’d like to see an updated version of the Original series. Maybe that MM GB Collection that was cancelled. Oh how cool would it be to see the old GB games with updated color!!!! Or maybe an altogether new type of MM game. I really don’t think that they could do the standard MM game for the DS- not really enough content. Any one care to speculate?

  40. JewceD says:

    BTW @ Jeffro

    Talk about having beef? How about the MM Legends only being released for JP PSP??? or the Mobile MMBN games, or the 4.5 BN? At least you have the option to buy MM9/10 in the US and don’t have to get the import and learn JP. Or how about the extras that we are just now getting with this MMZ collection that have been out in JP since those titles were originally released!! There is the something to have beef with.

  41. Thomas Jefferson says:

    That’s not the same thing at all. These are original, main entries.

    You can play Legends on PS, or use a PS1 ISO on the PSP, I assume.

    Crappy little mobile phone games… pfft.

    I bet you can find a translated ROM of exe 4.5.

    And all that petty little bonus MMZ stuff is also nothing.

    Not the same thing at all, “Jeffro”.

  42. Thomas Jefferson says:

    I know I’m not making much sense anymore. It’s just the anger.

    All I’m saying is that they have made PC ports of Mega Man for awhile now (almost the entire X series), and MM9/10 was suppose to be a multi-platform, so why didn’t they just include it? They could have easily made it available to download on Valve’s Steam system. They could have made more monies, perhaps.

    I can get Street Fighter 4 and RE5 on my PC. BUT I F***ING WANT MEGA MAN, CAPCOM! YOU IDIOTS! ARGH!

    *rips hair out*

  43. Doctor Andy says:

    There is nothing to be done to stop the incessant bitching…

  44. Thomas Jefferson says:

    I may be b****y, but at least I have the decency to censor myself, you a******!

    :D

    I kid, I kid. You’re alright.
