RUMOR: Is this Rockman Online?

Following up on our initial report of Rockman Online (referred to as “Mega Man Online” in the English translation of Capcom’s Investor Relations report), this image was submitted by TMMN user RockMaster, and apparently it’s been making the rounds at various Korean news sites. Unfortunately I picked up my degree in Japanese, not Korean, and while I hear the two have a lot of similarities, it’s a major barrier in doing my own research.

Some things seem to check out, with what little I can investigate. NeoWiz and Capcom are listed, and are obviously the creators of the game. “Pmang” is NeoWiz’s online casual game portal. However, some things still bug me. The image has no logo or other write-up, the Capcom copyright date is in 2007, and no sites outside of Korea have reported on this picture (until this one I suppose).

There is also some commentary with the picture from NeoWiz, which I’ve translated as best I can with machine translated. It appears to read: “NeoWiz is scheduled to develop the game using their experience and know-how from popular games like FIFA Online and Battlefield Online and optimize those qualities to best develop a Rockman Online for online platforms. ‘We will do our best to release a game that has value not just in this country, but on an international level, thanks to the cooperation of two companies.’ a spokesman for NeoWiz says.” It also seems Rockman Online is a tentative name for now.

This is appearing to look legit, though, and is mostly marked as a rumor for my own lack of Korean understanding. We will continue to look for more sources and info here at TMMN. RockMaster provided a number of sources himself, which we will list below. Thank you, RockMaster.

Can’t understand how you’d utilize online play. I hope it’s not like Final Fantasy XI or XIV where you’re picking a class and doing stupid missions with groups and shit.

I mean seriously, call me unimaginative, but I’m having trouble seeing where the online portion comes in…and someone mentioned that Online was used with Megaman before? Care to explain this?

  2. Megafan100 says:

Now that you mention his looks, I, too, wondered why Capcom changed the art style for X8. My friend, George, said they made the characters look like action figures, and I think he’s right (just look at their joints)! Don’t get the wrong idea, though. We never said we hated it. In fact, it’s not bad at all. I like both, but I still prefer the original Reploid look before X8 (they even retained the style in Command Mission). I was glad to see the classic style return in the remake, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (better to have that style in the remake of the original Mega Man X).

BTW, that is one AWESOME poster! Love the artwork! ^0^

  3. Retrotoro says:

That picture is of Megaman X, not the original Megaman. Notice the red forehead glow, the ridge on the helmet, and the torso armor, which the original Megaman lacks.

  4. Vanya says:

I agree that is definitely X, not Rock.

  5. Adaa says:

Hm, maybe Megaman Online is that was what said before here in the news when the Rockman Zero Collection adds the official timeline for the classic series. The Prototype of X is awakend in the classic series after a virus from outer space hits earth.

My theroy is that megaman was infected by the virus. So X takes over. So it can possible that this game will start the replacment of Megaman with Megaman X.

  6. SeraphMan says:

The image is sweet (I want that as a poster), and I want to believe, so badly, but I can’t. Not yet at least. Mega Man Online game, and it’s X series? Something sounds out of place here. And the image, while awesome, doesn’t do anything for me that says, “Yes! This is legit!”

  7. Clucking Chicken says:

@Teach: Lets compare two games. Diablo and World of Warcraft. If this is an ORPG (Online RPG) style, it could be like Diablo. In Diablo you play as the hero, and in online play you have a whole bunch of carbon copy characters aside from gear. In World of Warcraft, (MMO style) you don’t play as any lore characters from the Warcraft universe, instead you play a generic member of whichever race you chose. If it goes the ORPG route, we could all be playing characters from previous games, whereas if it’s the MMO route we’ll be playing as generic, no-name reploids. I’d rather not see a whole bunch of X’s and Zero’s around, so I’d rather be some random reploid character.

  8. W. Archives says:

From what I can understand from those links, there’s a real lack of information besides, “Neowiz Games is codeveloping MM online with Capcom.”

I don’t see any reason to doubt the authenticity of the articles, and despite the questionable application of online with the MM universe, I’m glad that some interesting game news from Asia is in a language I can understand.

  9. MarthKoopa says:

Ever since this Mega Man Online stuff was first announced, I’ve been trying to get some history on this Neowiz Games company, but I just can’t find any English version of their games…

    http://www.neowizgames.com/ngames_eng/

I found this, but all of the links are either broken completely or lead to Korean sites.

Why would Capcom choose such an obscure company that barely has anything in any other language? Their games look really crappy, too.

  10. HeatPhoenix says:

MarthKoopa, try searching for S4 League

Neowiz should be able to pull it off. Though I really hope it won’t be everyone’s X or Zero or whatnot. Customization ftw. I bet the currency for the MMO will be Bolts.

  12. odd-observation says:

judging by the looks, its a megamman x command mission prequel, the same earth is seen during final cutscenes. or another maverick hunter x

  13. SeraphMan says:

@Marthkoopa: They have a Wiki. From the info there, they’ve also worked with EA Games on FIFA Online, NBA Street, and Battle Field. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to play any of these. Maybe someone else can shed some light?

  14. Doctor Andy says:

    @Protostryker

Is Megaman hailed for obscure games like Mega Man Battle & Chase, Mega Man Soccer, Light and Wily’s Rockboard? Does the casual gamer even notice games like that? I think when most people think of a good megaman game none of those come up, not that they were bad but really..

  15. rnn says:

*yawn* Be back in a few months when there’s a little bit more substance…Or, judging from the ’2007′, maybe a few years.

  16. boyle2 says:

What a great picture to remember Mega Man and Capcom by.

  17. Trebuchet says:

I can see this messing up the canon somehow, if it’s an mmorpg.

  18. metalmariox100 says:

If this is real, hopefully they don’t take as long to make it like Metal Slug 0.

  19. LanceHeart says:

@Trebuchet: There’s always the Elf Wars that haven’t actually been made into a game. They’d even have the outline of the online world’s story progression.

  20. tornado man says:

The elf wars would would epically.

  21. Lumine1412 says:

just realize one thing: WAIT A MINUTE, X BUSTER ARM IS NOT ON THAT SIDE!!! HIS BUSTER IS ON THE RIGHT, NOT LEFT!!!
Sorry for the cap-lock, but this has lowered down the legitimaty of this image down a little bit (and the epicness as well)
Going into MS Paint and flip over this image should fix the problem, I guess

  22. Tornado Man says:

What if it’s a social network site game? Like a facebook game? ::shudders::

  23. Thomas Jefferson says:

    @lumine1412

Just because you usually see the buster drawn on that side in artwork doesn’t mean anything.

Remember that the buster isn’t hard-fixed on that arm. It materializes at will. I’m sure X is able to change which arm it materializes on. Busters have always been that way. I’m sure this is mentioned somewhere in canon.

  24. Thomas Jefferson says:

    Maybe I’m wrong.

But I don’t remember anything atm that says or shows otherwise.

Plus, it’s what makes the most sense, overall.

(And it’s the only thing that makes sense if we are going by in-game logic. You know… get on a ladder, shoot to the left, shoot to the right. It changes arms. But of course we can’t go by just that.)

  25. Thomas Jefferson says:

Well, I guess you wouldn’t even need to been on a ladder. Since the sprites are just mirrored when you face the other direction, the buster is always changing sides, right?

    Anyway, I’ll shut up now.

  26. Thomas Jefferson says:

One last post… just to say… I really wish Capcom would establish more details about the technologies within the MM universe.

Okay, sorry for the series of off-topic posts. :)

  27. LanceHeart says:

I guess you guys forgot that X can charge both busters in X3. He has buster animations that show him clearly switching arms while facing the same side.

  28. J. L. says:

“Well, I guess you wouldn’t even need to been on a ladder. Since the sprites are just mirrored when you face the other direction, the buster is always changing sides, right?”

Too true; I hate mirroring, though. A very cheap way to save effort and it looks really bad when talking about assymetrical sprites, like Grizzly Slash or Sagat.

If Nintendo could make two different sprites for Samus in the SUPER NES, why can’t Capcom do the same for the PS1?

  29. Stalker Fairy says:

Not sure if I was the first one but I did call this, back here: http://www.themmnetwork.com/2010/05/06/does-junes-nintendo-power-tease-mega-man-universe/

    @Lumine1412
Sometimes….the X manga has some interesting backstories. in the X2 manga, Dr. Cain fixed it so that X can access the Buster on both hands. Only problem is while X thought he could use 2 busters at the same time, Dr. Cain made it so that the Buster can be used on both hands, but not neccesarily the same time….

  30. HeatPhoenix says:

    @Everyone

The elf wars is intellectualy property of Inti Creates, not capcom and as such cannot be used if on the poster it only says Capcom and Neowiz

  31. Trigger says:

With regard to the whole buster-on-both-hands thing, it’s relatively common knowledge that Classic Mega Man has the ability to use both hands as busters simultaneously, as seen in Super Adventure Rockman. It’s logical to assume that X has the same ability — same robot designer (Dr. Light), after all, and Capcom was still using sprite mirroring back in the day, so why wouldn’t they explain it away using the same device?

  32. Trigger says:

    Double posts aside…

What’s to stop them from making this a fully 3D MMORPG? I for one would be thrilled to see a “City of Heroes”-esque MMO set in the Mega Man X universe — customize your own Reploid with its own special attributes, weapons, and armor, choose your alignment (Hunters or Mavericks), and compete for control of city areas. To be honest I’ve dreamed of that for years, and now to see something that hints at being like that…it’s thrilling!

  33. Lumine1412 says:

oh, I see, is that so. Sorry for my misassumption then

  34. jad says:

Mega Man Elf wars…unless they have something else…placing X there kind of brings that to mind.

  35. Quint says:

Hopefully the pic is totally unrelated.Legends/DASH would fit much better with any sort of online game than X would (heck.. i’d go so far as to say Megaman Soccer would fit better as an online series base than X would). Not to mention that the X series has been done to death more than any of the other series continuities by now.. at least classic series ones are still fun to play.

  36. mark says:

hmm i would like a kingdom hearts style of it lol, travel to the various megaman universes so it appeals to all mega man fans lol,

doesnt bother me if its X im a fan of all megamans (yes even starforce)

  37. misora88 says:

um … online play? is really strange that suddenly capcom made a game like that with x as the main figure, I wonder with what and how capcom will surprise.
