Roll’s Theme “Kaze yo Tsutaete” Translated for TvC:UAS
I’m sure some of you know this now with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars being out and all, but Roll’s longtime theme song, “Kaze yo Tsutaete” (roughly “Bequeath the Wind”) has been translated and localized for this title. Originally written for the 1997 game Mega Man Battle & Chase, the song has also been featured in games such as Marvel vs. Capcom and Rockman Complete Works. Furthermore, an 8-bit edition by Chibitech was the leading track of last year’s Chiptuned Rockman album from Inti Creates. While I have not yet jumped on the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom beat down bandwagon, and don’t know many details about the new arrangement, staff Splashman kindly provided me with the track. You can have a listen yourself.
Roll’s Theme in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars (English)
It’s a pretty good rendition all in all. However I have to admit that the singer they chose makes the song sound even closer to Taylor Dayne’s “Tell It To My Heart“.

Neat! I’ve always liked Roll’s theme song in Marvel vs Capcom, it’s interesting to hear a different version with english vocals. Though hearing the lyrics makes the song seem a little out of place for Roll, at least this Roll.
I have trouble equating this singer to Roll.
Actually, I have trouble understanding the lyrics, too.
Does this mean the japanese version won’t be in the game?
sorry to say this, but I am a “Kaze yo tsutaete” fan, and my thought on this: “this is simply terrible”
The vocal is unfit, they tried to compress to many lyrics together in a small space. The lyrics itself is already hard to hear, why can’t they just tell the old artist to sing off the paper script instead of a new singer. And the song isn’t fit for a fighting stage.
AND ESPECIALLY: The verse “Lalalalala” of this song is just simply terrible, the voice is just too rough for this song, a vocaloid can even do a better job than this singer, I am pretty sure the singer is just some amateur who got hired straight out of a talent agency and got paid roughly around 5k-10k to do this song.
Nevertheless how much, she don’t deserve a single penny for messing up such a great song this badly
*Note: This is not a troll message, just a simple evaluation*
What else is new? It’s the textbook case of problems with recording English language renditions of Japanese songs. Regardless of whether you use the original vocalist or not, it’s highly likely the lyrics will just barely be fitting into the instrumental measures seeing how usually, minimal localizing is done and it’s all literal translation. And literally translating Japanese lyrics can yield some lengthy detailed orations that flow none too well in English. It takes a lot of polish to get it just right, so it’s easy to see how it either ends up Engrish, or stretched out.
THAT BEING SAID, this really isn’t that bad. The song never did really relate to Roll, so the lyrics themselves aren’t really an issue…it still sounds nice. Does Aoki sound better singing it in its native language? Yeah, but it’s difficult to equate an English vocal like that without going over the top when you use another artist.
I’m more interested in whether or not the original TvC got a new arrangement. Anyone who can confirm that or if it was just the old B&C/MvC versions?
Well, this IS a surprise. Capcom won’t give the characters english voices, but they’ll translate the theme song of one character? Didn’t see that one coming. I’m sure New Era Outlaw will be doing backflips over this.
I don’t understand this bashing of english renditions. The singing isn’t all that bad, and I think that understanding the lyrics makes it more appealing than the original. Anyone who remembers the english theme for Princess Mononoke would agree that english versions of japanese songs need not sound stinted, and even Capcom’s previous english track, “Indestructible” for Street Fighter IV turned out to be annoyingly catchy. I hope this becomes a trend, because people connect better to lyrics they can understand instead of having to read subtitles.
I like it.
Also, you don’t hear this in a Stage. You hear it in the credits when you beat the game as Roll.
Wow, this is a great translation! I’ve always been a fun of her theme song, and it sounds pretty good in English. =) Just wish the singer’s voice was a tad bit higher, but, other wise, it was really good!
@NovamanCP:Thank god
Frankly, I hate her theme. It’s just J-Pop, which I despise. English or Japanese, it was always trash and generic.
That’s right, I’m not trolling. Thank god its only in the ending.
in b4 weeaboos attack me for not ‘understanding’ it
It’s good. ^^ I like it.
Why is it that Roll has a theme of her own that gets snuck in whenever she appears? Just out of curiosity. Is she more popular in Japan than in America?
That said, it was pretty cool to see it happen in this game–especially since it was translated. The little mini-game during the credits is even a little different than usual. That’s pretty cool itself.
what do you mean by it won’t be played in the stage? I played the Japanese version of Tatsunoko VS Capcom and everytime you switch into her, the “Kaze yo tsutaete” song always play, yes, In the “MIddle of the stage”
*Note: I don’t know about the english ver though*
^
Due to licensing issues and such, the character themes have been replaced by semi-generic themes for the individual stages. One of the few compromises that had to be made to get the game to us.
Wow, this is surprising! Not too bad, either! But I’m terrible at hearing lyrics correctly, so it’d be nice if someone transcribed them at some point.
@Shotoman:
Because Japan loves their little girls a little too much.
To be honest, I’m not sure why this song warranted an English version when the original Japanese song from Marvel vs Capcom wasn’t all that special to begin with. That said, I prefer the not-so-saccharine English vocals, even if the translation was a losing battle from the start.
Certainly interesting that they chose to translate this, or even include it, since all the other character themes were scrapped (even Capcom’s own themes, which make little sense).
By the way, this song originated in Mega Man Battle and Chase, not Marvel vs Capcom.
I like it, pretty good.
Hey, can Roll stage theme be the Chiptuned version then?
@Garbel – Battle and Chase? I totally stand corrected then. Never touched that game, even with the X Collection.
So someone mentioned KyT being in CGoH…answer for my question then? New arrangement like the English rendition or just the same old B&C/MvC version?
SINCE WHEN DOES AN ENGLISH MEGAMAN SONG GET LYRICS????
