IGN: In Defense of Mega Man 10?
Does Mega Man 10 need someone to come to its defense? Apparently so, as IGN has elected to do the honors. Perhaps it has something to do with the fairly strong amount of apparent anti-Wii sentiment that seems to be coming from the site as of late, but with the game also appearing on Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network, who can truly say for sure.
According to JGonzo at the Capcom*Unity, “there is no need for a defense of this game, as it targets a specific audience and gives them exactly what they want: retro Mega Man goodness.” But IGN has done so anyway, and here we have a couple of excerpts:
But what makes Mega Man 10 great isn’t its innovation, but its lack thereof. Mega Man 10 isn’t trying to break the mold and deliver something new and extraordinary. Instead, it’s trying to deliver something tried and true, something that’s been delivered plenty of times in the past. And that’s totally fine, since the Mega Man games on the NES provided some of the purest gameplay experiences in history, replete with crisp 8-bit graphics and some of the most famous MIDI music ever created. And as if that’s not enough, Capcom is even willing to make fun of itself and its treasured franchise, with laughably bad period box art and a Robot Master reveal — Sheep Man — that could only be considered tongue-in-cheek.
I implore the skeptics and loudmouths to do one thing. Sit down and play an old Mega Man game. Ignore Mega Man 9 completely, and go back further. If you don’t have access to an NES and the old cartridges, break out that Wii, go to the Virtual Console, and drop $5 on a game like Mega Man 3 (my favorite game of all time). Remove yourself from the critical and snarky internet age, and place yourself in, say, 1990. Let the classic music enter your ears as you browse the stage select screen. And then play. Experience the 8-bit Mega Man series’ influence on gaming culture. Imagine a simpler time in gaming when gameplay was the be all-end all, the king of the block. Immerse yourself in the 8-bit sights and sounds, the difficult and rewarding play. And then come back here and tell me you aren’t impressed with what that game not only did, but continues to do.
Not to cross my fandoms here, but this reminds me of something I think “Diamond” Dallas Page once said about wrestling: “Those who get it, there’s no need to explain; those who don’t get it, no amount of explaining is ever going to do.” I imagine there are exceptions to the rule, of course, but I think for the most part, people have their minds made up about games such as this, regardless of the reasoning behind their creation.
To find the full editorial, click on over to IGN here, and leave your own thoughts in the comments. All I ask is that you spare us the usual “I’d rather have Legends 3/X9/ZX3/Zero 5/Battle Network 7/Star Force 4 sentiments, as I think that really sort of escapes the point of it all.

@Flame: You are a complete idiot, who jumps to stupid assumptions. the guy was not biased, and never said anything about hating FPS or anything not 8-bit megaman. all he said was that the 8-bit games were good, and still are, and theres nothing wrong with megaman 10.
I still love MegaMan game Whatever it will become..because MegaMan have already became a part of my soul and my life…damn IGN please show an respect toward to the Blue Bomber!!
Well every Megaman Game is good … and with these new ideas… Mega Man 9 was really aswome to me … the music, the weapons … its just that its 8 bit but it represents old school for us old school gamers…
OLD SCHOOL ROCKS!! srry i just had to say that…
@Chris V: Telling people who have a different opinion than you that they should be slapped doesn’t exactly make you look any better. Everyone has the right to think and say what they want. And what’s this about “real” Mega Man fans? I’m just as much of a real fan as anyone else, so don’t come here saying things like that, because quite frankly it’s insulting. By the way, I don’t think anyone here is actually putting down the classic 8-bit style, they’re just worried that the series is going to be stuck doing this same thing forever when they could be trying to modernize it.
It failed because it has been over 9 years since the last game and not once has it been capitalized on for a sequel or spinoff since.
PSP releases? Five Island Adventure? Am I talking to myself here?
Maverick Hunter Zero, you need to learn to exercise some form of consideration and internet etiquette. The only thing “seriously disastrous” here is how long and redundant your postings are. Your initial comment was much, much too long. I’ve seen others spend much less text on discussions of much more substance. You could have made your point just as well while cutting at least half of the length, literally just running through and removing all the instances of you saying the same thing over and OVER. No re-wording or adjustment necessary. Just that.
WELL well well, we certainly are having a deep debate on this one aren’t we here?
Not actually.
Guess it’s time for the master to jump in to the game and straighten things out
Did you really just refer to yourself as “the master”? Hmmm…thanks Airman; with all these comments, it’s good to know ahead of time which ones I can skip.
Anyway, generally this whole comment thread is a mess. People going to painstaking lengths to restate something…to have someone else restate it again to them, where they then for no reason at all have a revelation. Probably the most confounding is all the instances of “shut up ign for defending old mega man! all right mega man 10!” Are people just blacking out certain words here and there? Where, pray tell, is the basic reading comprehension?
Holy crap, it’s ZX all over again =o ”WE MUST HAVE CHAAAANGE >=O” We don’t HAVE to have change, doesn’t mean we can’t have it though. Inafune wants to make these games, just let him.
@Boyle
I think the reasoning behind the IGN bashing is that even THEIR statement shows that they almost don’t truly comprehend Mega Man 10 or any Mega Man game to this matter to this day. The article makes Mega Man seem like some sort of running gag when the truth is, it’s Inafune revisiting the thing that made HIM comfortable. It has nothing to do with the rest of Capcom other than them green lighting it.
IGN makes it seem like he’s some kinda Capcom In-joke or something. I’m pretty sure everyone’s reading comprehension is fine. They just see it for more than what the MMN network is making it to be.
While I’m giving my opinion, I’m just gunna touch on my experience. Classic Mega Man Games aren’t hard. I just beat the robot Masters in 7 and 8 without using a special weapon or charge shot. and while I did die a few times due to carelessness, it wasn’t hard at all. It was more like long. When I was playing MM4, Drill Man’s stage practically handed me 9 lives… and I already had 3. Double Dragon, River City Ransom, Ninja Gaiden…now THOSE are hard games. There is nothing hard about Mega Man. It’s not really hardcore either. It’s very easy to pick-up and play. It’s that casualness that makes me keep coming back to Mega Man though. It’s not supposed to be a choke or a quick grab for cash. It’s a game a man feels comfortable coming back to make, and we feel comfortable coming back to play!
Well, it can be “hardcore” if you put certain restrictions on yourself. Reset the game if you get hit once.
For the lazy or uncaring, here’s the summary of the whole, so you don’t miss anything:
Pointless nerd rage.
@offullness: I can only speak for myself here, but I’m hardly outraged. It would help if you stopped trying to belittle people who’s opinions you don’t agree with. I did my best to express my opinion in a thoughtful and constructive manner. If that qualifies as “pointless nerd rage” to you, well… that’s sad.
Sure, we all love Mega Man. But does that mean we’re not allowed to question things? Do we all need to think alike and say “yes” to everything? It seems, that at the first sight of a complaint, that person is branded a “whiner” or a “hater”.
Like how you’re trying to belittle me?
Honestly, putting so much into this subject is quite embarrassing. It really shouldn’t be encouraged. There are much more important things you should have on your mind.
@offullness: Well, if you feel like I’ve tried to belittle you then I certainly didn’t do it purposely. The only slightly questionable thing I said, was that people who wish to hold on to the 8-bit style forever are boring. But that’s exactly how I feel. I think it’s a boring mentality. Look, if lengthy discussions are not your thing, then by all means, do something much more important since you obviously don’t find this very important.
Geez I didn’t think this would turn into a flame war after my initial comment. Maybe comments should be blocked on this topic just for safe measure lol. Anyway long live Megaman, whatever his future brings. Happy Holidays to all.
@shadowblaze66: I think you’re exaggerating calling this a flame war. I don’t recall any name-calling taking place or people resorting to insults (though I did see that someone said “whiny hypocrite”, not gonna mention names here). Go ahead and correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe there’s actually more bashing aimed at IGN than at anyone who’s been writing stuff here
@Enzan: Bashing IGN is fine. They probably don’t really “get” Mega Man. That’s beside the point though. You’ll read some here in the comments explicitly accusing IGN of being biased and forcing 8-bit Mega Man on people, and then they’ll cap off their post saying they were defending MM10. Some people just have their wires crossed….
And if it’s at all possible to avoid arguing about the argument, we should try and do that. Frankly I’d hesitate none at all to label several comments pointless nerd rage. Recoil however had one of the better comments, in terms of both substance and length. No one should be getting up in arms over it.
@Recoil
No, the last truly classic Zelda games were the Four Swords and Minish Cap.
While the other games are fine, they are still 3D, and simply not the same experinece.
@ Matthew:
Oh how mature we are!
so whats THIS?
—————————————————————-
“Just be absolutely certain that if you find yourself falling in the latter group, you duck quickly for the Irony Mountain that’s about to fall on your head as you play twenty-five first-person shooters next year. Then again, with a difficult game like Mega Man 10 headed your way, a game like Modern Warfare 2 might be more your speed after all.”
“Mega Man 7 and 8 are regularly considered the worst games in the series by the most ardent fans of the franchise”
“The series eventually evolved and broke off into what ultimately has become a fragmented franchise rife with garbage. ”
———————————————————–
So all because I have no fond memories of 8 bit, and criticize 10, Im going to play 25 FPS’s? Modern warfare is my type merely because Im not good at 10?
7 and 8 ‘generally’ considered the worst? thats a bold faced lie. MANY people liked 7 and 8, and many people disliked it. you cannot outright say the whole fanbase hated them both. What happns here, is that HE dislikes them, and assumes everyone else must have too.
And ‘rife with garbage’? he’s not biased, oh not at all.
much. Thats HIS opinion. the X series is garbage to him, the Zero and ZX series is as well… BN and SF is too… But the 8 bit is fine! oh yeah!
He is quite OBVIOUSLY biased. extremely so as well. None of his arguments are valid, or sensible, because they are just opinion based, not fact based. AT ALL.
Saying the 8 bit is strong and great is fine, but putting everything else down in favor of your preference is not much of a good defense.

Remember kids, insults are NOT valid arguments
Also, I love how he brings up Battletoads just to show how hardcore and LOL, OLD SKOOL he is.
Meh I love Megaman and always will but to do Megaman 10 in that 8-bit style well, It’s not bad but Megaman 9 was a revival and it even had a clever little bit in the end where Megaman shows Wily how many times he failed.
Hopefully they don’t run this into the ground. :l
@HeatPhoenix
I love you.
