Mega Man 10 (Update)
Capcom’s big birthday surprise for Mega Man‘s 22nd birthday may have just been spoiled.
Nintendo Power has posted a preview of their next issue, volume 250, aka the 2009 Holiday Special, and within comes a big surprise for fans of the Blue Bomber:

Just as Mega Man 9 was before it, Mega Man 10 will be an 8-bit styled game made available as a WiiWare title, which could easily mean that Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network versions will also be on the way, but that remains unconfirmed for now. Only two pages of the preview (which is also mentioned on the magazine’s cover) have been revealed, but here is what information we’ve managed to get from it:
In Mega Man 10, the story involves fighting to find the parts of a vaccine-making device needed in order to cure the world’s robots of Robotenza, a virus which causes those infected to overheat and go out of control (and Maverick Virus speculation begins… right… now).
Mega Man won’t be fighting alone, however; number-one son Proto Man is also willing to do his part to help out, and not only is he a playable character this time out, but he’ll be available from the outset, bringing with him the ability to slide, charge shots, and deflect enemy attacks with his shield. And if that wasn’t enough, there is a third playable hero that Capcom isn’t saying anything more about yet.
Stages include a computer-themed backdrop, complete with monitors, microchips, and mouse-shaped enemies. It also features obstacles such as conveyor belts and blocks which disappear shortly after being touched. Another stage uses lava pools in a vertically-oriented setting, with conveyor belts obstructing the way and block-shaped enemies appearing as quickly as they can be disposed of.
Finally, there is the Robot Master revealed: Sheep Man. Sheep Man is capable of turning himself into four “clouds” which hover overhead and attack with lightning. This attack is known as the “Thunder Wool,” which floats at an angle before releasing a burst of electricity.
Capcom*Unity reveals that the above image will be the cover subscribers will be getting in their mailbox. Retail will have the issue on December 22nd.
We’ll bring you more news as it develops. But for now, take comfort in the fact that we can now legitimately tell anyone who insists that Mega Man X is Mega Man 10 to shut it.
For the sake of convenience, here is a look at the article. Click to go directly to the preview:

Update: Courtesy of the Capcom*Unity, we can see that Mr. Inafune is happy with the subscriber version of the new issue:

In addition, we missed a caption for one of the pictures which reveals those who thought Mega Man 9 might have been too difficult will get a reprieve this time out, thanks to an Easy Mode.

Well, I’m excited for MM10!
As for MaJoR’s and boyle’s comment, I must say I disagree somewhat. Capcom does try new things. Who would’ve thought about an MM RPG? So yes, they do try new things…they just run them into the ground. As with many video game companies.
Mark my words, the retro Mega Man games will likely run their course and Capcom will do something else. ‘Til then, I’m going to enjoy my retro sequels, thanks very much.
I’m happy they’re continuing the original Mega Man games in this way. I hope they keep going. Mega Man doesn’t need to be reinvented… that’s why you have spinoffs like Legends and Battle Network. These WiiWare titles are cheap to make, they make Capcom money, and they’re fun to play. Everyone’s happy!
Exactly!
Seriously, some people are getting too stiff to realize a great thing when they see it. Stop whining about the game just because its not exactly what YOU wanted to see, kick back and enjoy it for what it is, an addition to our favourite game series ever and as long as they keep making them, I for one will keep purchasing and playing them with no regrets. 8 bit or not, I will ALWAYS love Mega Man and crying that a game should be more modern looking or looking down at Capcom for making a “cash grab” is pointless and in poor taste. As I said earlier, look at Sonic’s creators, they keep trying to make him newer and put him in new 3D situations but where is that getting him? That’s right, nowhere fast. Mega Man’s creators know where he excels and they want to keep him there. If they want Mega Man to try something new then they will create a new series for him (like BN, SF, ZX, Legends etc) that’s not lazy its just the way Mega Man grows and evolves, it just happens to be different fro the way other game characters have changed over the years and unlike many other characters, Mega Man is still in the market going strong because of it.
Well, I’m very surprised. And also very happy.
So… Odds that 3P will be Bass? Odds the it’ll be a Mega-Girl Roll?
Good and not so good I can bet.
MEGAMAN !) IS COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGA!
Megaman X is NOT Megaman 10?!
…
…
…
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
…
Wait, there’s a sheep man?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
At first I was a little disappointed that it was 8-bit again, but then I remembered a long period where there was no Megaman games, between 8 and 9, so I’m happy and excited for this. I am wondering what the deal is with Sheep Man though…
Ha! You have to love that artwork. Proto Man looks so awesome.
Anyway, I’m glad. You really can’t go very wrong with the MM formula.
I’ll guess the third character is either Roll, Bass, Duo, King, or a new character. Maybe a time traveling Zero! Pfft.
You know, I STILL haven’t played Mega Man 9 yet! I’ve been a PC gamer for the last 5 or so years. I never had too much of a desire to get any of the current consoles. But I’ll finally fork over the money for a Wii (since it’s the cheapest) just to play MM9 and MM10.
I think this is another cruel elaborate joke.
Another retro-cool MM game?
This is gonna get old real quick.
Holy cow, 112 comments! Well, let’s hope Capcom “better” including multiplayer feature …and that wasn’t a request. as for the third hero, I think It would either be Roll or Bass… 3 players at the same time anyone?
This is ufair to us BN fans, the Original megaman fans get what they wanted the dream game megaman 10, while we BN fans get some crappy re realese of the first BN? what is this!?
The people who are upset with the graphics and retro gameplay probably realize that at some point MegaMan needs to attract some new fans. Megaman can’t get away with the retro games forever. The nostalgia is great for people who have been with the series from the beginning, but people who haven’t will be bored by the formula much sooner.
If MegaMan doesn’t appeal to a broad audience then Capcom won’t make as many games. Current-gen games are expensive to make, and companies need to convince a lot of people to buy a game just to cover costs.
Personally, I am slightly worried that Capcom isn’t willing to put enough effort into the series to make something new and innovative. I’m not knocking Megaman 10 and I am glad to see they still care about the original fans, but I want to see more effort. I want to see just how strongly Capcom is committed to MegaMan. And who knows? They might surprise me…With the announcement of another new game!
Now I need a wii because…
MEGAMAN 10 IS COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
I’m freaking out in this place!
Sheep Man??? Where has all the dignity gone? This is turning from a series which had a side you could joke about, to a full-on joke…
I wish they’d make a MMX9 with full HD-sprites, a la Wario Land Shake It or Muramasa the Demon Blade….. it would be pure ownage… i.e. we could REALLY see Inafune’s artistry come to life.
But it would actually be a great idea if they changed sheep man it into sheep woman… what? I don’t have any furry fet-
Does anybody hold megaman to any standard? Seriously. I come across a lot of fans who denounce valid and constructive criticisms of this franchise simply because they see it as an attack on the game and filter out anything they see as negative commentary regardless if it is backed up with a sound argument. They start the ad hominem arguments which try to demean the fans who openly critisze and withhold acceptance of the game based on past experience or foreseeable issues that one might reasonably be skeptical about.
For me, on one hand, I look foward to any news regarding megaman because its one of my favorite video game franchises and hence the reason Im here now. On the other, I look for possible improvements to the formula or general megaman experience. And I will voice my opinion if I believe Capcom is not delivering what I consider a quality game. Because I hold the series to some standard that increases or decreases depending on what’s being produced. And my standards have been steadily lowering for years now because of the cycle of repetition that Capcom adheres to when creating subsequent titles that make playing each game an overwhelming bore to me.
I’d also like to state that this is my own opinion of the game and how it relates to me. Im not dictating this for other people to adopt as their own. Everyone’s standards, preferences and experiences are different with Megaman. I only wish to share my setiments and hope that the future of this series can be progressive yet true to itself. Which is no easy task to accomplish as it requires balancing new ideas, while tweeking the old formula to complement new, refreshing ideas. A task I dont feel Capcom is putting enough effort I believe that if they make a fresh and engaging experience that does just as I have stated a few sentences ago, the commercial and financial success will follow, and the fanbase will grow. If you build it they will come. If you build it right, they will stay.
Steve: Wow…where were you when the “Operate Shooting Star” Demo came out?
Can’t believe I missed this the other day.
Meh to another 8-bit style, and God no to Sheepman. That is the worst robot master of all time – Plantman has been surpassed!
What the hell?
Megaman 9 was cute, but again? why not do this on the side with a REAL game releaesed at around the same time?
This is bullshit. Capcom needs to get off their ass and make a decent megaman game. (new zero game anybody?)
I agree with FB and airman.
BUT, I would reaaaaaaaallly like to see a project that had more to. instead of making this they’re main thing for megaman.
@zenken
new zero game? really? i love that series but do you really want to dig up one of the few series’ that actually wrapped itself up well?
°_° WOW…
But… so soon?
Good lord I love that retro goofy art! Such a great idea!
I would love a megaman zero 5. I absolutely hated that zero died at the end of zero 4 and ciel was crying her eyes out for him. What kind of ending was that!? It should have had a happy ending like battle network.

YES!!!
I don’t seem to understand what people saw in the more modern MM games. MM 7 and 8 were just terrible IMO, they really didn’t hold up to the originals in terms of controls and overall gameplay. Instead of bitching about that the new installments not being modern, just enjoy the games while they last, because every nice thing comes to an end at some point if you know what I mean. Try to at least appreciate the games for what they are, not how they look.
As for the Sheep Man idea, I think its the stupidest thing in the world. But hey, who ever said every robot master had to be cool >_>
AFTER MEGAMAN 10 CAPCOM SHOULD START DEVOLOPING MEGAMAN X 9 …… AND MAYBE 10 AFTERWARDS..
Well megaman 7, megaman 8 and megaman&bass were my favorite games in the classic series. I loved the updated graphics and storyline. I didn’t find the gameplay to be any different.
On a side note I really want megaman the wily wars to be released on the virtual console. It’s a collection of megaman 1,2,3 with updated graphics. It came out in japan and europe on the sega genesis but unfortunately it wasn’t released in the U.S.
@Senken
“Megaman 9 was cute, but again? why not do this on the side with a REAL game releaesed at around the same time?”
HOW DARE YOU
I’m exicited as well but Sheep Man? Woo Hoo none the less
