EXE OSS demo goes live in Japan; footage and screens

As we reported just yesterday, a demo of Rockman EXE Operate Shooting Star was set to become available later this month. Well, today is later this month! Those with a Japanese Wii, primarily people living in Japan, can connect to the Everyone’s Nintendo Channel and download the demo onto their DS. The demo is the exact same battle demo that was available at Tokyo Game Show, except cut short at the battle with Star Force MegaMan. You can see the extent of the demo in the video above, and also check out screens and info at Nigoli’s Rockman Series Blog and COCOROG.

  1. Fishman says:

    Ha! The Star Force 1 Regular Battle theme.

    I’d say that has to be my favorite normal battle theme in the EXE-SF Series as a collective.

    Oh, and inb4irrationalexesfhaters.

  2. Gaia says:

    Liking this so far. The guy must be good if he played the first plenty games of EXE and SF.

  3. NovaManXP says:

    What the hell? Despite it being two lines, the ADD system works exactly like BN1′s? That’s dumb. Come on Capcom, is the only new thing you’ve added to the system * codes?

  4. BasspownsRougue says:

    hmm this looks pretty simple and rather random for an introduction to SSR. I think this isn’t even part of the game and it was just built as a demo scenario. Have they confirmed this is one of the scenarios in the game tho?

  5. Nigoli says:

    My only gripe with the Demo was not being able to fight SSR. Then again, if it was the other TGS Demo that only leads up to the flaming Oven, we wouldn’t of been able to face Fireman.

    It’s very comforting playing on the DS version though.

  6. Fishman says:

    Nova, by leaving the ADD System in EXE1 style, they’re leaving it far more multi-code friendly. EXE2 and 3′s ADD button just made those who ran unicodes even more powerful, which saddened me, since I don’t think that’s how the games were necessarily meant to be played.

    By reinstating ADD as a row-adder, you essentially have the full ten chips after one turn, creating an effect similar to NumberSoul or the NumberOpen Navi Customizer part.

  7. HeatPhoenix says:

    jeez, not even remixed battle music, nice letdown capcom. . .

  8. mainfinger says:

    the boss music sounds slightly different. It’s really subtle, but the bass instrument plays repeated notes at the end of the riff instead of sustained notes. I just listened to the original version to check and sure enough its different. Its always weird to see slight differences like this when music is ported to a different system.

  9. ZEROmaverick says:

    I really don’t get it.. I like EXE, but OSS is the same game we got in GBA, I don’t see a decade of improvements… just the same game repackaged

  10. Lee Cyaoran says:

    I just hope that in the game you can do counters and stuff, but seeing the Video and the FireMan NetBattle… I don’t really believe it =(

    And… WTF? Z-Cannon? >.<!

  11. Windsor Genesis says:

    I agree with ZeroMaverick, and honest, not to be a hater, it’s just true.

  12. Spike says:

    My excitement for this game is pretty much shot. This is just the first Battle Network.

  13. Sammu says:

    I’ve never played the first BN1, but as far as I can see, we can’t keep speculating like this. With new screenshots, we get our hopes up. With gameplay like this, it’s deminished…

    I don’t think we should let it get to us like this. With time, we’ll find out more, and then be able to place our final opinions.

    Besides- how can one say it’s just a clear cut copy of BN1 with the inclusition of Star Force MegaMan involved in the plot? If CoroCoro has been dropping hints, I doubt it’s a clone.

    Of course, I’ve never played the first BN1, but I’m definatly not going to knock it. I’d give it a try, first.

    And besides? Who said they were trying to improve? Just because it’s different, doesn’t mean it needs to be improved. Look at MegaMan 9. It’s 8 Bit, and fine as is.

    … The SF1 Battle Music made me smile… X3

    … And I don’t wanna be the one to say this, but I hope they keep the Japanese VAs. Mega and Lan sound adorable.

    But if they add English VAs… meh. Oh well. I’ll still play.

  14. Chris says:

    I very much agree with sammu. Remember the old proverb “you can’t judge a book by its cover”, well the same applies here. Okay right now yes it mereley looks like a reprinted game with some slight alterations, but try and remember three things:

    1) They never claimed that this was going to be a new game they literally told us that this was going to be Battle Network 1 re-released and crossed with Starforce. That really seems to be what I’m looking at here. It’s not like Capcom lied to us or anything.

    2) This is just a trailer, remember that there are probably hundreds of things that we haven’t seen yet and those changes could really impact the appearance and overall game play of this game.

    3) This game is still being made (i.e.-they haven’t finished it yet!) There could be many more changes yet to come and what we are seeing in this video could just br a preliminary idea. (A Proto Game *snicker*) I know I know really bad pun, trust me, I hit myself for that one….I just couldn’t resist.

    So anyway, what I’m getting at is please don’t write off a game before even trying it. There have been many good video game, heck some great Mega Man re-realesed games such as Mega Man Powered Up, Maverick Hunter X, and The Wily Wars, so we will see just how great/not great this game is when we get it, but not from a few minutes of video clip.

  15. Netto Potter says:

    OMFG!
    I can’t wait to have this game!
    it’s so sweet we can fight with Geo in the game! =D

  16. PStart says:

    Considering this is the ONLY MegaMan title (besides…Rush Marine) on radar, I can’t help but keep my eye on it. I keep hoping for new features to get announced, or something really shocking, but nothin had stuck out so far.

    I really hope it does not turn out a disappointment, but at the moment I’m not as excited as when it was first announced.

  17. mega rock.exe says:

    Not even remixed music? At least BN5DS had nice remakes. This is just becoming a more and more raw of a port.

  18. Windsor Genesis says:

    Chris, I agree with much of your point, but the ‘book by it’s cover’ thing can’t really be applied here. We’ve seen more of the game than it’s boxart :P We know what the gameplay looks like, and whether that’s good or bad is up to the beholder. It’s true though that Capcom never promised a spectacular remake or anything like that, so there’s no harm done there. About new features, I doubt any of them will really change the appearance or gameplay. The point of operate shooting star is to get back to Battle Network characters and battle system, so I don’t think Capcom will risk changing much, or the point will be defeated. If they were to bring in later games features (syncro and counters and those types.), then it won’t feel so much like the first game anymore.

    mega rock.exe
    Besides the Star Force elements, it pretty much is a raw port, but that’s all they said it was gonna be, so…

    It’s really depressing that this is the only Megaman game in development. I can’t start thinking about that though or you’ll all hate me -real- fast XP I don’t count Rush Marine, but out of curiosity do we know when that’s coming out beside the general Q3 2009 area?

  19. Chris says:

    Well yeah, that kind of was what I was getting at, I just used “judge a book by its cover” for lack of a better term. Don’t get too depressed over this though. While it may take some serious time, I certainly don’t think we’ve seen the last of the Blue Bomber. For one rumor/example, it is highly likely that Capcom is batting around ideas for classic series Mega Man 10 (since 9 was such a huge hit). I know that Keiji Inafune stated in an interview earlier this year that he wouldn’t mind seeing continuations of any of the Mega Man series’. My money is definetley on Classic or X series continuing and if OSS actually does okay, who knows? We might just see Battle Network get picked up again.

  20. Chris says:

    On that note there are two things I would love to see Capcom get up and do for us (the fans):

    1) I was very angry when Mega Man Mania (the re-release of the original 5 Game Boy Games) was announced and then cancelled and forgotten about. I definetley think this should be picked back up and that the DS/DSi would be a nice system for it to have additional features and bonus material.

    2) I know that the graphics were very cartoony and cute but I personally loved Mega Man Powered Up! I really enjoyed being able to play as so many characters (all the bosses, Proto Man, Roll, 3 versions of Mega Man). Mega Man 2 (NES) was my very favourite Mega Man game ever and I would pay anything they want to get them to Make Mega Man Powered Up 2! I just revel at the possibility of playing as characters like Air Man and Crash Man.

    Anyway, just throwing these out there.

  21. Windsor Genesis says:

    Chris
    Inafune can say what he likes :P He’s been saying that he wants Legends to continue for years and years and it hasn’t happened. It hasn’t come close to happening. I don’t think they’re batting around Megaman 10 ideas. I think the only thing they know for sure is ‘it would be 8-bit again’ and I have to say I’d be very dissapointed as that would only again prove Capcom’s continuous lack of effort with the series as of late. On top of that, it would just be milking at that point, which my number one reason for my dislike of Battle Network/Star Force, or in this case, I guess both :P
    If these games sell well then there is a very good chance that we won’t see the classic characters again. But if they do well then Capcom will be making a good bussiness decision and who am I to say anything about that? It would only be throwing fans in a ditch, and that’s worth keeping the company afloat, especially considering, that amount of people may be a much smaller number than I thought it was.

  22. GSR says:

    @Chris:

    There’s almost no chance this is a prototype; EXE OSS was 90% done at TGS according to the devs, and that was almost a month ago. Release is in just about a month, frankly all I can imagine is them finishing up the music and doing some bug tweaking at this point.

  23. Chris says:

    Well okay then, I didn’t know that, but I still say that its tough to judge how good a game is until you actually play it.

  24. Chris says:

    @Windsor Genesis

    Lack of effort? Okay so a remake or re-release of a game may be considered lack of effort. However I would hardly call Mega Man 9 a game with no effort put in. The only reason it was in 8-bit was for nostalgia value for fans of the classic series; not due to lack of effort. The game itself was a whole new game with brand new features and characters. The only real thing re-hashed was some of the music (some of it was from old games like Mega Man 2) but again I think this was to add to the nostalgia value.

    Secondly, what exactly do you mean by throwing fans in the ditch to keep the company afloat etc.? I don’t really understand what you’re getting at.

  25. Treble Bass, ON AIR! says:

    @Windsor
    Megaman 10? They already came out with it, then made it into a new series, that is, the X series. >_<

  26. Chris says:

    @Treble Bass

    I seriously hope that you’re kidding right? The “X” in the X series is not now nor has it ever been the roman numeral for 10. This did confuse many people back when Mega Man X was first released but Capcom has made it crystal clear since then that the X series is completely different from the classic series and that X does not equal 10. The X series is the series that follows after the END of the classic series (whenever it ends).

  27. Ryan Ferneau says:

    Right, the music so far has sounded less like Game Boy and more like NES mixed with on-board MIDI. Might not be a bad thing though…

  28. Ryudo says:

    ‘What the hell? Despite it being two lines, the ADD system works exactly like BN1’s?’

    Fucking lame. The BN1 ADD system is terrible and I’m very disappointed they went back to that. You’d think after adding in the star code they would have at least done that as well.

  29. Fishman says:

    Yes, it’s “terrible” that you automatically get five chips from it. I guess you must think it’s “awful” that the asterisk wildcard is even present.

    Good things =/= Bad things.

    This opens up folders to reasonably be dual-coded, since you can expand to ten chips when the time is right, immediately and without sacrificial means. Now, if there were still three rows, I’d say that EXE1 add was a bad idea, but all this does is give the effect of Numberopen/Numbersoul by using up a turn.

  30. Ryan Ferneau says:

    Isn’t 3 rows better than 2? All they need now is a way for it not to keep snapping back to 1 the turn after.

  31. Alilatias says:

    Ryan: You are asking for something broken, not balanced.

    If there is a way in this game to stop the rows from snapping back to 1, no one in their right mind with a reasonably decent folder would ever use SSR (assuming SSR can’t use the add function).

    …Although it would actually be somewhat funny if this does indeed happen. Kind of like how almost everyone (ab)used Folderback in EXE 3, which is probably the single most broken thing in any Megaman game ever.

  32. Ryan Ferneau says:

    It’s not broken; it’s keeping Add from becoming useless. There’s always a way for the designers to counter something that would otherwise be broken, anyway.

  33. Andy says:

    Are they trying for nostalgic value or just being lazy?

  34. Treble Bass, ON AIR! says:

    @Chris

    You say to-ma-tae,
    I say to-may-to.

  35. Windsor Genesis says:

    Hey guys. I posted a reply but it isn’t showing up. I typed it all out again and it tells me I already wrote all that. Should I wait for it to show up or write a new one? Just trying not to annoy with a duplicate post if it’s gonna show up later. :P

  36. Gaia says:

    People still bickering about this? Get a grip guys, fanboyisim and damnboyisim is the worst thing ever to happen to a series.

    This would most likely join the ranks of Rockman Rockman and Irregular Hunter X anyway. They were both remakes with added content, so why not EXE?

    Besides, anyone who loves the ZERO series doesn’t know this little fact:
    EXE came out before the ZERO series, because Inufaune may have wanted to try a diffrent genere.

  37. Gaia says:

    I also forgot Wily Wars, it was a 4-in-one port, along with the PS1 6 (or 7)-in-one if I remember.

  38. Alilatias says:

    Gaia: This sort of makes me wonder why the Rockman fanbase ended up being this fractured while the Mario fanbase, which has gone through very similar phases, does not seem anywhere near as fractured.

    Perhaps it’s the type of audience?

  39. Chris says:

    @Gaia

    Thank you, that’s what I was trying to get at earlier. People should worry less about whether a game is going to be good or not just by seeing brief clips of it. So what if its a remake, it could still be cool.

    Additionally, Wily Wars was a 3 in one port plus the Wily tower stages and it was only released here for the Sega Channel. The 6 in one port you’re thinking of was Rockman Complete works for PSX which was Mega Man 1-6 re-released but I think it was only in Japan.

  40. mega rock.exe says:

    The boxart looks retro. I think they’re definitely going for nostalgia or something along those lines. Nobody purposely mixes sprite styles without having a purpose.

  41. Ryan Ferneau says:

    Except Rockman Complete Works wasn’t 6-in-1; it was each NES game released ONE AT A TIME.

  42. AlphaOmega says:

    Looks cool for me i can´t wait wehn this game comming out(anyway I WANT FINALY MEGAMAN STAR FORCE 3 ON EUROPE COMMON CAPCOM BRING IT OUT. any europe
    fans dont you agree with me?)

  43. politian says:

    @ Alilatias

    Why does the rockman fanbase seem so fractured you ask? In comparision to Mario’s fanbase? Because even when Mario does everything from being a doctor, to driving go-karts, having his own Rpg’s games. As well as having characters in his own series from Wario to Peach spawn their own fairly successful games. The fans no matter how “hardcore”, can always expect Nintendo to make at least one 3-D or 2-D platforming Mario game for each of its consoles and handhelds. And make it well, or at least make a clear tangible effort to do so which is, speaking generally, apparent in all of Mario’s games. There is also another element. The fact that Mario, no matter what he does, is always the same Mario, and will therefore always retain his crowd for the most part.

    As far as Rockman is concerned. Capcom has released only one classic rockman series game in ten years and the last X game to come out was four or five years ago. Rockman 9 was also made by the same development team responsible for keeping rockman’s platforming roots alive through the Zero and Zx series. Their silence this year no doubt will make some fans feel jittery. In other words, those who have stuck with the original rockman since his beginning, and love the original rockman formula, selecting stages and jumping platforms and pits while shooting enemies and studying a bosses’ pattern to beat him in a fast paced manner and earning a new weapon or technique for it, will no doubt feel like they were discarded in favor of Exe and Rnr. Which continues to get game after game.

    And each rockman series, with different characters and scenarios, will appeal to different audiences. You cannot seriously expect everyone who plays the fairly-serious X and hard-as-nails Zero series to just jump on to the Exe wagon whose scenarios, while pretty decent, are ultimately aimed solely at children, and vice-versa. It’s alright to ask them to accept Exe as a respectable series with its own merits and not lash out at it. But to ask them to accept the exe series as something that can legitimately stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of the classic or X series is pretty much out of the question.

    Because as far as it can be seen, Capcom has basically placed all its side-scrollers, including the very series that begun it all, on the sideline in favor of an Rpg series that gets one or two games a year, guaranteed, just because that Rpg series generates more revenue. And to add insult to injury, said Rpgs are released each year with almost no effort at seriously improving or even refining the mechanics of the game. Was Exe’s battle system good and also original when it first came out? Yes. Has the development teams behind these games done anything whatsoever in the six years they had to improve upon it beyond a bunch of battle transformations, new chips, and a Navi customizer and other many incredibly tiny tweaks? No. And before it is said that the side-scrolling rockman games are hashed out in the same manner, it must be stated that what works for a successful side-scrolling sequel does not necessarily work for an Rpg sequel.

    The resentment often felt towards the Exe and Rnr series does have tangible justification, even if it is not necessarily expressed in the most rational manner.

  44. Chris says:

    @Politian

    First off I would like to say how well you construct your opinions and state your facts. I definetley respect someone who takes the time to gather their thoughts and speak in a rational manner the way you have over others who just blurt out inanities on these forums and expect to be taken seriously.

    For the most part I agree with your argument; especially with how you point out that different scenarios and incarnations of a game will not always appeal to the same people. Some like side scrolling platformers, others prefer RPG’s, etc. (Personally I like all of the Mega Man titles, but I’m a little strange anyway so maybe I don’t count, but there is a thing to be said for eclecticism).

    However I do have a couple of problems with what you’re saying (just minor things):

    1) You are correct in the fact that Mario has held on to his character while having taken on so many different roles throughout the decades but there is one small problem with that. He himself may not have changed but his games certainly have. While there is one coming out later this year/early next year, like Mega Man, Mario’s platformers have either been less focused on or changed significantly since his early days from Nintendo. Mario’s more recent adventures lie more in the realms of character gatherings and sporting events (SSBB, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, etc.) and even his exclusive games now focus more on the gathering of stars and complete stages in a 3-D platform rather than 2-D platform jumping. Even the game that is soon to come out looks very different from the platformers we used to know. There is nothing wrong with this, its just the way the games grew over time. They changed to keep up with the newer and newer systems that kept appearing. If they didn’t change, Mario would have been left behind long ago. (Constantly re-releasing old games with a facelift can only get them so far.

    The same applies to Mega Man; he just grew in a different way from Mario. Instead of donning a new outfit and thusly a slightly new job each time, he got a whole new universe and character to go along with him. Even in the G4 interview on the Mega Man Anniversary Disc they stated that “…once the Super Nintendo hit, Capcom knew that they had to do more than simply re-release games from the old system. They had to change Mega Man and let him grow a bit, so they made him…Mega Man X!” This argument can be taken further to say that once the handheld systems began to take off such as the GBA and the DS, they wanted to let Mega Man take on new forms and try new things as a character. Thus they experimented with RPG style games like Battle Network and Action/Adventure style games such as Legends (which actually did very well for them). It can also hardly be stated that platform versions of Mega Man have been forgotten in favour of RPG’s since like you said, while it has been a while since the last X series game and Mega Man 9 sort came out of thin air after such a long silence, its appearnce means that Capcom is not about to let their older series just die off forgotten.

    2) You seem to have a problem with the battle network and starforce series’ and feel that they never changed and could not hold a candle to the platforming versions of Mega Man (such as X or Zero series). While by no means am I asking you or anyone else to like these games for no reason and force opinions on you, it is unfair to say that these games are not worthy to be held against the platforming series. For those that enjoy them, they are excellent games and I would just as gladly any day pick up and play Starforce 3 as I would Mega Man X5.

    It is also not entirely fair to criticize the Exe games for having very subtle changes in their six game run. This is for two reasons. First, changes were made to the games and they got more and more flexible and easy to use as they went along (don’t believe me? Go play Battle Network 1 for five minutes and then play Battle Network 6 right after, they almost feel like two different games in terms of graphical changes and play guidelines). Second, Capcom is notorious for not messing with a good thing. If something is making them money and fans are responding then they don’t like to tamper with the formula too much (why fix what isn’t broken?), and you yourself even noticed that the side scrollers did the same thing; Mega Man 1-6 were all very similar games, Mega Man X1-6 were as well, and Zero1-4 were are practically identical except for some aesthetic and control changes. This DOES apply just as easily to the EXE frame of mind as they were all excellent games and they garnered Capcom much prestige and credibility.

    What in the end I am getting at is not that you are wrong for not liking the EXE and starforce games. If you don’t like them then that’s fine (they’re not everyone’s cup of tea). However holding resentment against the games and the company that made them is unfair because change happens….yeah it sucks sometimes, but it has to happen. If it doesn’t fans will grow listless of them and they begin to fade from memory. If you don’t believe me, then here’s a good example: Kid Icarus, a game that was once very popular in the old NES days and only made 1-2 games. It was almost gone from the general public’s memory until SSBB revitalised it a little. Now if they re-release a new Kid Icarus game for the Wii (as they have been rumoring), will it still be a side-scrolling/vertical scrolling platformer…possibly, but very unlikely. This is merely just the way of things.

  45. Ryudo says:

    Chris makes a valid point. People complain about the BN/SF series’ lack of changes through the years when really, almost every series of Megaman can be accused of this (I can’t really comment on Legends due to having only played the first game). Amusing double standard, now that I think of it.

  46. Chris says:

    @Ryudo

    Thanks for the comment, as for the Legends series, while there were only two games created for it, it was already showing some signs of repitition as the only real difference between the two games was a new story, a few new characters, and some slight control improvements.

  47. Keso_R says:

    I was hoping someone would’ve gotten my Mail about this sooner or later, but I guess no one at TMMN read it…
