chiptunedThe album project that Ippo Yamada mentioned on the Spiceman blog a short while back has been revealed, and it’s indeed Mega Man themed. Called “Chip Tuned Rockman,” the album will feature 20 tracks from a wide selection of classic Mega Man/Rockman titles that have been arranged with a chip tune flavor (i.e. 8-bit style). Amazingly, each of the 20 tracks has been arranged by an entirely different artist, hailing from around the world.

The album will come with a booklet that has interviews with 10 different artists who have worked on Mega Man music, and will have a special column about video game music and Mega Man music. It will also contain a color comic illustrated by Hitoshi Ariga.

Inti Creates plans to release the album on October 15th for ¥3,000 (roughly $33 US), but will sell copies in advance at the 2009 Tokyo Game Show next weekend. Be sure to check out the medley sample in the top bar of the page. (Or, check it out right here.)

    OHHH SNAP awesome!

  2. J. L. says:

So, what’s the point in having 8-bit remixes of songs that were already in 8-bit to begin?

  3. Heat Man says:

@ J. L.> They’re still arranged, they just have an 8-bit style. But they are not truly chip tunes. It’s going to be more like the “Rockman a” medley featured on ZXA Tunes.

this is pretty sweet and highly unexpected. I enjoy chiptunes so i’ll look forward to hearing the new arrangements

  5. mainfinger says:

holy crap i just noticed virt and rushjet are on this album. That made my excitement increase ten fold.

  6. artbiter says:

    Nice variety of songs.

  7. Alilatias says:

This is nice and all, but I hope all of these albums weren’t the ONLY things Rockman-related that Inti Creates have been working on the past year.

  8. Windsor Genesis says:

Oh my goodness! Yes! Yes! Yes! This is the best Megaman news I’ve heard in ages! I am so hyped up for this!

  9. Sniper Joe says:

    Definetley a good thing.

  10. Rock Miyabi says:

I guess I’m sorta on the fence, in-between everyone’s opinions. On the one hand, this is great that Inti is producing something like this with more or less fan-made mixes on an official CD. I was quite amused when I saw Virt and rushjet on there. Plus it’s a much nicer variety of all the Classic games. And I really did like lots of what I heard in that sample.

But at the same time, like J.L. said, what’s the point of 8-bit remixes of 8-bit tunes? New arrangement or not, I’d probably be more psyched if it WERE something like the ‘Rockman a’ track, taking tunes from X/Zero/ZX/etc. that had a different musical feel in the first place and mixing them in a new way. And I say that as someone who feels the Classic series music really still is the most memorable of them all.

For all the people who complain about the RM9 Arranged OST not being up to par, I can’t imagine how they’re gonna react to this when it’s released and we’ve heard the whole thing. I’d rather have seen Rock Arranged Vol. 2, but oh well. At least it’s something different again, and we can’t accuse them of not trying something new with each passing CD.

Meh, but of course since there’s complimentary new Ariga work, I’ll probably have to buy it no matter what. :D

  11. maxchain says:

Awww, none of those is the Astro Man theme!

  12. pstart says:

I like 8-bit chiptune remixes, especially ones that change good but slow songs into faster paced songs. A good example is the music found in Pokemon Puzzle Challenge for gameboy. It has the same instrument set available that Gold and Silver had, but totally remixes the songs in a cool new way.

Help me identify all the songs in the sampler (in order)!

  13. Do we have it? I’d like a download O_o

  14. Heat Man says:

@ PStart: I think #24 is actually Ground Man. Unfortunately I can’t make out any of the missing spots yet. =\

Edit: Actually, I think #8 is a part of MM9’s special stage.

  15. pstart says:

Oh woops…I though the ones before 2nd SnakeMan were the same song, my bad. Good call though, totally GroundMan!

  16. RadonRaphael says:

I’m definetly exited! Especially because of Virt being in there. His chiptunes are probably the best there are out there :o And who doesn’t want more 8-bit Megaman music? :D

  17. Shadow Jacky says:

    *screams as hard as possible*

DAMN, I can’t believe the selection and that it’s also fan-made too? OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m too excited for this. I really love the underrated songs getting recognition.

  18. Omar says:

I’ma’ release a chip tune in Inafune’s butt if he doesn’t hop to Legends 3.

  19. Furysetzer says:

Waaay too expensive for an arranged album. It would be very cost prohibitive for me to import it, especially since I already have Rockman 1~6.

Capcom needs to seriously invest in the Itunes store for international distribution of Mega Man tunes.

  20. hsbinh1412 says:

Kaze-yo-tsutaete O_O??? OMG, can anyone send the content of this album to the MMN music archived?

  21. PStart says:

You guys are makin me think the price is so high cuz they want to make up for all the people who DOWNLOAD it.

  22. McCartlennstarrison says:

    About the music archive…

How are you able to host free downloads for the official soundtracks for 1-6, X, Zero and all of that, but not for Mega Man 9?

It can’t have anything to do with it’s newness, right? You’re still providing for free which is suppose to cost money.

How does that work? How are you not in trouble?

  23. PStart says:

@McCartlennstarrison: It is kind of because it is new. The site had that soundtrack up awhile back, but was told by Capcom to take it down (the CDs going on sale and all).

Capcom’s REALLY lenient as far as fans using their sprites and music for whatever; I’ve seen tons of occasions where people even sold their own MegaMan merchandise with no hassle. But when you have a new product and something like that which would effect sales in a big way, even Capcom has to act.

  24. BOX MAAAN says:

Niiice. I wonder if Amazon would be able to sell it, because I certainly won’t be importing it at that price.

If all else fails, I expect/hope this site to have it up within a fair amount of time. It’ll be a shame though, missing out on an actual copy of the CD.

  25. Heat Man says:

Just clicked with me while listening, #28 is a piece of Time Man’s theme from track 4. Also, I think #7 is a piece of Slash Man’s theme, track 8.

Edit: Part 25 is from Snake Man’s theme. This one was driving me nuts, because it sounds like the ending of another video game theme I must be intimately familiar with, but I can’t place my finger on it.
