“What? Mega Man’s Taken Over the Bomb?!”

Ah, now here’s yet another blast from the past, one which I bet fewer Mega Man fans are familiar with.
Many of us remember the Ruby-Spears Mega Man animated series which ran in syndication, went to Fox Family, then was released on DVD and then re-released on DVD again more recently. At the time of its original airing, however, there was an action figure line from Bandai of America, sitting alongside their other products of the day as The Tick and, of course, Power Rangers.
What some people may not know, however, is that like those other lines, the Mega Man action figure line had its own commercial. However, to the best of my knowledge, this one did not run on television; instead, it was shown before the animated episodes which were collected and released on VHS by Sony Wonder (and if you like the animated series’ art style, it has some decent covers for collectors).
Recently, someone posted the commercial to GameTrailers, and it has now made their “Featured” list for the day. So here it is, with Dr. Wily narrating in all his non-Scott McNeil-powered glory:
The figures were cool, especially in lieu of any real alternatives at the time. It’s a shame the second wave never made it into production, as Mega Man did have some neat custom armor in the cartoons that would have made for some neat figures.
My own collection of these remains rather poor, unfortunately; when they came out, I was “too old for toys,” but too young to get a job while the toys were around. I did come by an incomplete and slightly-worn figure of Mega Man himself later, but with no Mega Buster. Nonetheless, the line was a good source for some Robot Masters who haven’t seen other releases, such as Snake Man, Drill Man, and Bright Man. Perhaps someday I’ll get around to hunting these down.

“Cutting you to pieces will be SHEAR delight!”
oh man, that cartoon cracks me up… especially Cut Man
“Collect them all” ^_^ Sounds a lot like the Pokemon Slogan (“gotta catch ‘em all”).
SomeGuy> Er, do they not use that in toy commercials anymore? I think that one’s as old as time itself. Or at least capitalism.
Or maybe just action figure lines.

That aint’ no doctor wily
“3 SHEARS for Megaman!”
You said it. I have the show on DVD. I still watch it… haha. I actually have a few of those action figures. I have a complete Gutsman, Elecman, and Snakeman. And a Cutman missing his legs.
That is NOT Wily’s voice. lol Nice figures non-the-less, except they were made to look like the cartoon. (Being bulky, etc…)
Man, I remember wanted those figures so bad. I kept watch for them when I went shopping with mom, back in the day, but never ran across any. Of course, they aren’t as amazing looking as they seemed to be then, but they were the only Mega Man toys in existance. I’m happy with Bandai’s model/figures now, but they are still pretty fragile. I wish someone would just make some nice figures someday! Jazwares stunk up the scene and killed the fun for everyone. Who else is gona bother to try anymore?
Oh, DrillMan, SnakeMan, and BrightMan? I have all 3 of those. I used to love them so hard, I would take them everywhere with me in a Tupperware container filled with tissues for cushioning.
Yeah, and you thought you were a a bigger RockMan fan than I am. =p
For the record, I have distinct memories of seeing this commercial on television. Well, more accurately, I remember seeing the commercial before this, and I wasn’t into the series enough at the time to have ever bought or rented VHS episodes.
Same here. That was definitely on television at least a few times.
That commercial was misleading, my old Gutsman figure came with a fire hydrant, not a brick cluster. Apart from Rush, he was the only one I could ever find unfortunately. I looked so desperately for more, too.
I first saw this ad from an old video I checked out at the library. I knew it wasn’t Wily’s voice-(I’m the biggest Dr. Wily fan there is). And I’m still looking for an action figure of him!!
Wily’s awesome!!! And it’s not even his voice. Worse, they take out scenes from The Beginning (yeah,Ive seen it a trillion times). I’m still looking to buy an old video with this clip on it.
I remember that commercial. They used to play it a few times on TV back when I was a kid.
I remember owning the small 2 inch Roll figure that came with Cutman when I was younger.I remember the day I bought the Roll figure,I put it under my shirt and walked around the toystore because I thought my Mom wouldn’t buy it for me.Then my cousin caught me shoplifting and I ended up showing the toy to her.But anyways,I was able to buy it.
The Roll figure was so small enough that it could fit in my sister’s Polly Pocket (back when they were small) and my Ewok Micro Machine playset.
But as I got older,my Roll figure got lost or maybe got given away to my younger cousin at the time.T_T
I knwo i had MegaMan and Rush, and I think I might have had Cutman and Gutsman.
